UM Building Trust and Rapport and Ms Edelson Discussion Replies
Ms. Edelson is an 84 year?old African?American widow living alone in her own home. She has lived in the same neighborhood for over 45 years. Her husband died two years ago and since then her health has deteriorated. She and her husband had no children and her closest relatives are nieces and nephews who live nearby, but who visit infrequently.
Over the past year, Ms. Edelson has become increasingly hostile and suspicious. She has accused her nieces and nephews of trying to take advantage of her when they offer to help her with shopping and transportation. Ms. Edelson owns her home and thanks to a life?long pattern of frugality, she has a comfortable savings account. She suspects that her relatives just want her money and she has essentially shut them out of her life. Other than a few neighbors who visit her once in awhile, Ms. Edelson has few social contacts.
Questions:
- What are some of the assumptions you might make about the client and/or situation?
- What are some possible assumptions the client might make about you?
- What preparation for the first session would you want to do?
Respond to peers seperatly.
1 1. I assume that the client feels suspicious of her nieces and nephews because they are coming around more now that she is alone, as opposed to when her husband was still around. Even though this would seem like an average progression when an elder loses their spouse, I understand how she could perceive their motives as ill-intent. Along with that feeling, it could be that their nieces and nephews took advantage of her husband when he was alive and are trying to do the same thing to her now that she is alone and in a season of mourning.
2. The client may assume that I am also after her money because of my age and possible closeness to her nieces and nephews age. On top of that, by me being a young black female, she may see me in the same light as her niece.
3. I would want to interview the neighbors she still has contact with and gather their interactions with Ms. Edelson. After speaking with her neighbors, she gathered information on the relationship between her nieces and nephews and her and why they think she has become suspicious of them.
2 1. I assume that Ms. Edelson has probably had a hard time coping with her husband’s death, which has caused an extra level of difficulty in her life. I can assume that her nieces and nephews have the best intentions at heart but I cannot be too sure until I have met with them more. I can also assume that since her health is deteriorating there could be something else going on such as Alzheimer’s that hasn’t been looked into and that could be playing a part in Ms. Edelson becoming hostile and shutting out family.
2. Ms. Edelson may assume that I am not really there for her and she may feel that this is just another way for her nieces and nephews to get into her life and take her money. Ms. Edelson may also assume that since I am a new face in her life she can’t trust me in general and may shut me out due to not knowing her.
3. I would want to know more about Ms. Edelson before I meet with her, possibly with her relatives since she seems to be shutting them out more than anyone else. I would also want to meet with the neighbors since she seems to feel more comfortable with them and she has been in this same neighborhood for over 45 years they may know her better than family. I think it would also be important to do some research or readings on working with elderly clients, especially since Ms. Edelson is becoming hostile and suspicious I don’t want her to see me that way before we are able to form a connection
3 1. I think She is experiencing Grief in her own way and she has become suspicious of the people around her probably due to the fact that maybe her husband was her rock and also maybe she saw something’s surrounding money after her husband died and maybe that’s why she’s anxious.
2. I think that she would assume i’m here to take her family’s side and defend them and that i’m here to ensure that her family and friends get the money.
3. before meeting with the client i would meet with family and neighbors to get different parts of the story but also when meeting with the client i would just work in building that relationship to see what is actually going on I would probably talk about her husband and how she is holding up with her grief and work on her telling me about herself and maybe having her talk about things that she likes and what made her happy and safe.
