The scenario is a patient in the hospital. Her room is cluttered with trash, her shades are down, she’s not eating properly, her clothes are soiled and wet. When I think of a patient in this situation, I think of someone who is in an non healing environment. That’s where Florence Nightengale’s Environmental Theory will come into play. It is defined by Nightengale as “the act of utilizing the environment of the patient to assist him in his recovery.” This patient needs her roomed cleaned, to go outside and get fresh air, a nutrition consult, her bed changed, perhaps a shower, and also a clean change of clothes. By putting this list into practice, Florence Nightengale believed that all these things provide a healthy environment that will assist in healing the patient. Research has shown that through nursing education how the design environment impacts patients during the act of nursing. A gap of this theory that can be noted is that having a clean environment still does not prevent patients from getting diseases, or infections. Nightengale believed that nature alone can cure.
