Differences from Liberian/West African Culture
Religious Beliefs
Indian culture is diverse, with various religious beliefs including Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Christianity, and others, whereas Liberian/West African culture predominantly consists of Christian and indigenous African beliefs (Banerjee, 2008).
Social Structure
Indian society is structured around a caste system, which determines social hierarchy and roles, whereas West African societies typically have more fluid social structures with less emphasis on caste distinctions (Banerjee, 2008).
Family Dynamics
In Indian culture, there’s a strong emphasis on extended family ties and respect for elders, often living in multi-generational households. (Banerjee, 2008). This is different from West African families who may also value extended family but might have different structures and dynamics.
Cuisine
Indian cuisine is known for its diverse flavors, spices, and vegetarian options, while West African cuisine often includes staples like rice, cassava, and various meats with less emphasis on vegetarian dishes (Banerjee, 2008).
Current Perceptions
Growing up, my exposure to Indian culture was limited to occasional encounters with Indian classmates and friends. My sources of information about Indian culture have mainly been through media portrayals, such as Bollywood movies and documentaries. I have always been intrigued by the rich history, vibrant traditions, and deep spirituality of Indian culture. However, my understanding is limited, and I’m eager to delve deeper and gain firsthand experience through immersion activities like attending a traditional Indian wedding ceremony.
By immersing myself in the Indian culture, I aim to delve beyond surface-level understandings and truly grasp the intricate tapestry of its diversity, traditions, and values. Through firsthand experiences such as attending a traditional Indian wedding ceremony, I anticipate encountering the richness of rituals, the warmth of familial bonds, and the vibrant expressions of spirituality that characterize Indian society (Banerjee, 2008). This immersive journey presents an opportunity not only to expand my knowledge but also to challenge preconceived notions and biases, fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities inherent in cultural dynamics. By embracing this journey of exploration, I envision myself emerging as a more culturally competent human services professional practitioner, equipped with the empathy, sensitivity, and insight needed to effectively engage with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and address their unique needs and challenges.
