Mechanical Reproduction and the Aura of an Artwork Essay

In the previous lecture, we studied the aura of an artwork, as stated by Walter Benjamin. He stated the change/diminishing in the aura of the works through mechanical reproduction. Benjamin discussed this with respect to photographs of the artworks, and through films.

For the assignment, you are expected to address the concept of the aura of an artwork based on its reproduction, not just a photograph, but through its reproduction of various items of utility. Taking Leonardo’s Mona Lisa as the reference, discuss the concept of its aura, when its image is reproduced on items of daily use, posters, artworks of different artists, or visual reproductions that are not necessarily artworks. Select any 3-5 works for the same.

Put forward your views in minimum 750 words. Discuss if you agree or disagree with Benjamin’s view of the diminishing aura and justify your views through the works selected by you.
