Respond to this: The case study “At 50, have you lived your life?” tells the story of a young nurse who believes expensive tests and treatments should not be “wasted” on patients above the age of 50 because at that age they have “basically lived their lives” (Pozgar, 2019). This raises several ethical concerns including beneficence, autonomy, and justice. Beneficence is “the principle of doing good, demonstrating kindness, showing compassion, and helping others” (Pozgar, 2019). If healthcare providers refuse to take care of someone regardless of their race, culture, age, gender, etc it would raise an ethical concern for beneficence. I imagine that most people 50 years and older would still choose to have tests and treatments run. Not allowing a patient to make their own decision would be an ethical concern for autonomy. Last but not least, it would be an injustice to not provide care to someone because of their age when everyone should be treated fairly. Ageism is another ethical concern that could also be raised. I can think of many possible responses to this young nurse’s ignorant comment. I would likely attempt to argue a point with her. I would ask her how she would feel
