Module 8 Q1: From above, please review where our nation’s healthcare dollars comes from and where it is spent. From a legal standpoint, what specific practices, policies, or innovations could be implemented to improve the effectiveness of our healthcare system? How might these legal changes benefit patient care or provide additional value to our nation’s healthcare spending? From looking at the graphs provided, the majority of our spending goes to hospital care. Healthcare tends to throw pills at patients with new medical conditions. High blood pressure? Here’s a pill for that. High Cholesterol? Here’s another pill for that. We need to put more emphasis on educating patients and seeking alternate treatments. This may require a lifestyle change but could be a lifelong solution to the patients instead of adding another pill to their daily meds. Pharmacology is a large industry in healthcare and while not all issues can be solved without medications, we should at least try. Preventative medicine is another way to reduce healthcare costs. The healthcare facility I work at currently offers 3 hours every two weeks to put towards employee health. Those 3 hours can be used for physical health, mental health or education. Our program is a great way to initiate preventative medicine. Offering routine lab work is another great way to catch something before it becomes a problem. If a patient is borderline diabetic on their yearly labs, their provider can get them in to see a dietitian,
