Layout and Publication Design – 2-1 Activity: Composition Techniques Assignment
12613Overview
Grid layouts are an excellent tool for structuring your content. However, for optimum effect, you should use other fundamental design tools and techniques such as visual hierarchy and composition to help focus the audience’s attention on the important elements and message of your design. For example, a designer can apply visual hierarchy principles to their use of typography to draw the viewer’s eye to the important details of an event or product. Your choice of grid structures, typography, and composition techniques should change based on your design’s purpose. The same content should be designed to look different based on its target audience, format, and purpose.
Scenario
You are a freelance graphic designer. A local museum is curating collections from various artists for their upcoming seasonal exhibits. You are tasked with creating various promotional materials for these exhibits in print and digital formats. The marketing team wants to send a digital newsletter to their regular patrons highlighting these artists and their exhibits. You have been asked to reuse the content they provided for the digital magazine article to create a 2-page newsletter.
In this activity, you will select the appropriate grid layouts and apply effective visual hierarchy and composition techniques to design the newsletter. You will use the specifications in the Museum Collection Design Brief. This design brief was also used in Module One.
Directions
Use Adobe InDesign to create a new document using the design specifications provided in the Museum Collection Design Brief. Then, use appropriate grid types, composition techniques, and visual hierarchy to design a newsletter with the content provided in the design brief.
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
Create grid structures for a digital newsletter based on the specifications provided in the design brief.
Open a new InDesign document.
Use a separate layer to create the grids.
Edit the images provided in the design brief to meet digital publication requirements.
Use Adobe Photoshop to complete this step.
Change the image to a low resolution of 72 dpi.
Resize images if necessary.
Organize the given copy and the edited images using guidelines that are appropriate for the selected grid layout.
Use a separate layer to complete this step.
Include the following sections from the design brief:
Name of Exhibition
Sub-Headline Information
Date of Exhibition
Location of Exhibition
Guest Artists and Their Collection
Body Copy
Apply the principles of visual hierarchy to the use of typography in the newsletter. Consider the following:
Use of different font types, colors, and sizes for various newsletter sections.
Placement and text alignment on the grid layout
Apply composition techniques that are best suited to the design of the newsletter. Consider the following aspects of composition in your design:
Use of white space or negative space
Use of balance (symmetry and asymmetry)
Size and placement of images on the grid layout
Explain how the combination of grid structures, typography, and composition techniques improves the newsletter’s effectiveness.
Use a text box on a new page of the InDesign document to record your response.
Note: You will need to provide attribution for images in this assignment. The museum, artists, and collections are fictitious. You should use the original image source for the correct attributions, not the fictitious names and titles provided in the Museum Collection Design Brief. Proper attribution has been provided within the Museum Collection Images ZIP file. Refer to the Openly Licensed Images area of your course for more information on how to provide attribution.
What to Submit
Package your InDesign document and compress the folder into a ZIP file for submission. Sources should be cited according to MLA style, where applicable.
