Write and submit a topic proposal
As part of your Applied History Project, the first assignment requirement expects students to write and submit a topic proposal. With approval from your instructor, select a topic from the Current Policy Challenges list posted below.
Current Policy Challenges:
· Education
· Women’s Rights
· Government Programs
· Civil Rights
· Immigration
· Transportation
· Public Health
· Have your own suggestion??
Once you select a topic, I recommend starting with a question that you want to learn more about related to your topic. For instance, you might be interested in women’s rights, but more specifically the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). You might wonder why the ERA is a prominent talking point in the news as of late, so you might ask: Can the ERA still be ratified? Or perhaps you are interested in politics and you recently learned about the state of Georgia’s new voting laws. Perhaps you wonder how and why politicians seek to change voting laws? Or maybe you find the pandemic interesting and are interested in learning how previous generation handled pandemics.
After selecting a topic and identifying a question, students will need to conduct preliminary research and then write a short proposal for instructor approval. Your topic proposal should be typed in a word document, doubled spaced with a minimum word count of 200 words. The proposal should include a question about the policy challenge, a summary of the current policy, the challenge(s) associated with this policy and a working bibliography of 6 academic sources using Chicago Style formatting.
Researching Your Topic: To begin the research process, I strongly recommend starting with the UMGC library. Here is the link to get started. If you need additional support getting started, please email your instructor. You can also reach out to a reference librarian. Students have the option to email, text or phone a reference librarian. The link to get started is here .
Submitting Your Work: Students can submit their work under Topic and Proposal directions. Click on this assignment, scroll to the bottom of the page where you see “Add Attachments,” and then attach assignment here. Students can also submit this assignment through the Assignment tab. Students will also see the rubric attached to this assignment.
