Do the Bible and the research and theory on topics of positive psychology, flow, and post-traumatic growth support one another, conflict with one another, or some of both?
As you engage with the material for this Module, what issues come up for you? What are your thoughts and feelings about the topics for this Module? Share your perspectives on the material. Some topics and questions for consideration in this Module’s discussion are:
· Were there any topics that were particularly interesting to you in this Module? If so, which ones, and why?
· Was there anything in this Module that seemed surprising to you or different from what you might have previously thought? If so, what, and why? How was it different or surprising?
· Did you notice any difference in the information in the journal articles and the more general-audience material about the longitudinal studies? How is the information presented differently in the two types of sources?
· What are some advantages of longitudinal studies? What can they tell us that can be useful in our own lives? Are there any disadvantages to these studies? If so, what are they?
· The Harvard study has been criticized because the participants were/are mostly upper and upper-middle class white males who attended Harvard. It has been pointed out that the results may not be generalizable to other demographic groups or to people in general. Comment on this criticism. Does it make the study less valid or reliable? What value, if any, does the study have for the population as a whole?
· Do the Bible and the research and theory on topics of positive psychology, flow, and post-traumatic growth support one another, conflict with one another, or some of both? In what ways do they support, or not support, one another? Discuss your perspectives.
· What does the Bible say about adult psychology? Is the Bible compatible or incompatible with what you are learning about adult psychology – or some of both? In what ways are they compatible or incompatible?
One option to incorporate into this discussion is to complete some of the questionnaires on the Authentic Happiness website (one of the readings for this Module) and discuss your results.
You are not limited to these questions and topics, and you do not need to answer all the questions posed above. They are suggested to provide a starting point for your thought processes. Share your own ideas that relate to the topics of the Module, and pose questions of your own if you wish. You may also incorporate sources other than those from the course materials
