General Directions: Students will need to read the Smith (2014) article in the Handbook on Aging (Harris, 2018) and the article by Calasanti & Slevin (2006).
(Additionally, students will need to take the Living-to-100 Simulation Test in order to successfully complete this assignment.)

All pages must be double-spaced, 1-inch margins on the top, bottom, left, and right. All pages must be numbered following the American Psychological Association style.
All assignments must have a simple cover page. Please use your textbook and the Handbook on Aging. The total pages for this assignment should be at least 6 pages and these 6 pages do not include the pages of the Living to 100 Calculator Output Report, the Cover page, or the Reference page.

Please include a minimum of (4) four references and one must be your textbook and two must be from the Handbook on Aging. Other empirical articles may be used but points will be taken off if the required references and citations are not included. Please, cite your sources in several areas of your assignment whenever necessary.
The Critical Aging Lab Assignment has 3 major parts: All parts should make-up one full document for Critical Aging Lab#1.
For Part 1, students must address the below question(s)/prompt(s) following your reading from the Handbook on Aging (Harris, 2018) article by Smith (2014) on pages 2-19 and the article by Calasanti & Slevin (2006) on pages 50-63.
Part 1: Review of Smith (2014) and Calasanti & Slevin (2006) Article on the Historical Perspectives on Aging & Gerontology and Age as a Basis for Inequality.
Using the article by Smith (2014), please discuss in detail what is aging/gerontology, and how has aging as a discipline evolved over time as a meaningful area of study and research? Please discuss several of the key milestones that helped to advance aging and gerontology as a serious field of study. Please use specific examples from your readings to support your responses to Part 1 of this Critical Aging Lab.
Additionally, using the article by Calasanti & Slevin (2006), please discuss the feminist perspective on aging and age bias and why this approach has neglected a focus on age relations.
Additionally, please explore how age relations and bias in the aging process have impacted the following dimensions: loss of power, workplace issues and marginalization, wealth and income, and cultural devaluation. This Part of Lab 1 should be at least 4 pages.

If it is ok with your doctor, taking an 81 mg aspirin every day improves your heart and brain health and could help you delay or escape a heart attack or stroke. Taking an aspirin each day, perferably in the evening, could add 1 year to your life expectancy.
Ultraviolet rays present in sunlight and tanning beds greatly increase your risk of skin cancer, including melanoma. They also increase wrinkles. You are already providing some protection for yourself. Further minimizing your sun exposure could add a quarter of a year to your life expectancy
There is a clear link between the inflammation of gum disease and heart disease. Do a good job of flossing daily and you could add half a year to your life expectancy.
Nutrition
It is unclear if your current weight puts you at increased risk for heart disease or cancer. None the less, by no longer being overweight you would likely improve your overall health and could increase your life expecatancy by half a year or more.

Increasing your good cholesterol (called HDL cholesterol) to a normal or even higher level could increase your life expectancy by a year

Decreasing your diastolic blood pressure (the second of the two numbers) to less than 80 or even lower could add a quarter of a year to your life expectancy
