*Include an introductory paragraph consisting of your thesis statement and well-developed lead-in sentences, at least three or four body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.
*The essay must include direct quotations (using quotation marks) from the essay you are summarizing. Failure to meet this requirement will result in a “D” for the assignment
*The essay must be at least 750 words
*The essay must be double-spaced, 12-point size type, Times New Roman font
Rubic/Grading
To earn a C grade or better (70-79), the essay must contain the following:
1) An introductory paragraph with a clearly stated thesis, neither too broad nor too narrow.
2) Several (more than two) developmental paragraphs, each of which contains a topic sentence related to the thesis, concrete illustrations that support the controlling idea, effective transitions, and a summary where possible/appropriate.
3) A train of thought that shows unity and coherence.
4) A concluding paragraph.
5) Competence in grammar (e.g., no fragments; no unnecessary shifts; no subject-verb or pronoun-antecedent disagreements, etc.)
6) Generally well-developed but lacks extensive detail in some areas
A C essay is a competent work, a success. It shows a clear understanding of the assignment, but it may contain clichés, wordiness, or awkward expressions. It lacks originality and specificity. Overall, the level of expression (prose style, vocabulary, maturity of sentence structure, etc.) is not on an upper level.
The B essay (80-89) demonstrates the competencies of the C essay in form and content. In addition, the B paper:
1) Shows originality in both style and content.
2) Has good organization, mature sentence structure, and vivid, abundant details. All generalities (opinions) are supported.
3) Has well-chosen vocabulary and appropriate diction.
4) Is well-developed
The A essay (90+):
1) Contains original ideas that are exceptionally rich.
2) Has supporting details that are unusually vivid and strikingly appropriate.
3) Shows awareness of the exact meanings and flavor of the vocabulary used.
4) Contains sentences that have force, fluency, and elegance. No words are wasted.
5) Shows skill in using coordination, subordination, and parallelism.
6) Has no serious mechanical errors in grammar or spelling.
7) Is exceptionally well-developed
8) Is unique.
The D essay (60-69):
1) Lacks the qualities of the C essay.
2) Has a trite thesis that is too broad or too narrow or confusing.
3) Has insufficient evidence for the thesis and the subordinate opinions.
4) Has an unclear organizational pattern and underdeveloped paragraphs.
5) Contains errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
6) Is underdeveloped
The F essay (0-55):
1) Does not respond to the assignment requirements/instructions in one or more ways.
2) Contains a trivial thesis or no clear thesis at all.
3) May be only a collection of loosely related opinions.
4) Shows a poor grasp of paragraph organization.
5) Is seriously underdeveloped.
6) Contains many errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure which impede a smooth reading and communication of ideas
