Address the following criteria: Proposed Solution: (a) Describe the proposed solution (or intervention) for the problem and the way(s) in which it is consistent with current evidence. Heavily reference and provide substantial evidence for your solution or intervention. (b) Consider if the intervention may be unrealistic in your setting, too costly, or there is a lack of appropriate training available to deliver the intervention. If the intervention is unrealistic, you may need to go back and make changes to your PICOT before continuing. Organization Culture: Explain the way(s) in which the proposed solution is consistent with the organization or community culture and resources. Expected Outcomes: Explain the expected outcomes of the project. The outcomes should flow from the PICOT. Method to Achieve Outcomes: Develop an outline of how the outcomes will be achieved. List any specific barriers that will need to be assessed and eliminated. Make sure to mention any assumptions or limitations which may need to be addressed. Outcome Impact: Describe the impact the outcomes will have on one or all of the following indicators: quality care improvement, patient-centered quality care, efficiency of processes, environmental changes, and/or professional expertise. What are some of the obstacles or barriers to implementing EBP in nursing?
Introduction
When I was in graduate school, I had a professor who told us that we should aspire to be like a doctor. We were to believe that we could change people’s lives and make the world better. This seemed like an impossible dream at the time, but as we’ve all learned since then, many people have done just that. In nursing, this goal is known as Evidence-Based Practice (EBP). There is no question that EBP has transformed medicine across the board—from patient care to research studies and education for future nurses. But what about EBP in nursing? While there are clear benefits to implementing EBP into our daily practice with patients, there are also barriers and obstacles which may prevent us from doing so successfully enough for everyone involved.
EBP takes work.
EBP is a goal we should all aspire to, but it takes time and effort to implement. It requires ongoing support from the health care team, as well as your peers who are already implementing EBP in their own practices. The change in culture that comes with implementing EBP will not happen overnight—it’s a process that takes time for everyone involved. You’ll need to be patient with yourself as well as those around you who may not see the value of EBP right away either!
Barriers to the use of EBP by nurses range from the individual to the institutional level.
Barriers to the use of EBP by nurses range from the individual to the institutional level. The most common barriers involve lack of time, lack of knowledge, and lack of support. Nurses may have difficulty accessing training or resources required for implementing EBP because they are understaffed or overworked in their current position. Additionally, leadership support is often lacking when it comes to implementing evidence-based practices within an organization; this can make it difficult for nurses who want to implement new strategies into practice because they do not have access to adequate funding or training opportunities (Hale & Lowe 2015).
Barriers at a larger scale include limited access to data collection tools that allow researchers outside their own field(s) access so that they can gain insight into what works best within their own departments/locations/organizations (e..g., Hale & Lowe 2015).
Nurses are busy professionals who are responsible not only for responding to their patients changing needs, but often for managing their organizations electronic health records.
Nurses are busy professionals who are responsible not only for responding to their patients changing needs, but often for managing their organizations electronic health records. In the past few years, the amount of time nurses have spent on administrative tasks has increased dramatically. It is important that nurses use EBP methods to help them manage these administrative tasks so they can focus more on caring for patients and less on paperwork!
Changing health care systems can be tempting, but costly.
Changing health care systems can be tempting, but costly.
While implementing EBP in nursing is still new and evolving, there are several barriers that must be overcome before it can be fully implemented. One of the most important ones is cost—the cost of not implementing EBP is much higher than the cost of implementing it.[1] For example: if you don’t implement an evidence-based practice guideline for a particular condition such as pneumonia or sepsis, then your hospital will likely lose money because sicker patients will make up more of their revenue stream; worse yet—lives may be lost unnecessarily because outcomes weren’t improved due to poor interventions or treatments being administered beforehand (this includes things like antibiotics being given before tests).
What is currently known about an issue may not be enough to create change.
The first step in evidence-based practice is understanding what it means. An example of this definition would be: “Evidence-based practice is a process used by health care providers to determine what treatments or interventions are most effective for their patients.” This doesn’t mean that you need to know everything about EBP, but it does mean that there’s more than one way to do it. The best way to learn more about EBP is through research and reading articles online or in books; however, there are also plenty resources available through your local university library (and even some online places). Once you’ve found some good resources on how best practices can help improve patient outcomes, you can begin developing your own hypothesis based on those findings—a hypothesis being an idea formed after conducting research into a topic so as not just knowledge but also understanding how things work together
While EBP is a goal we should all aspire to, it can be difficult to make it part of our daily practice.
While EBP is a goal we should all aspire to, it can be difficult to make it part of our daily practice. The following are some of the barriers that may keep you from implementing EBP in your work:
-
Time. Implementing EBP requires time and effort. You’ll need to invest in learning how the system works and finding resources that can help guide you along your journey toward implementation—which means that if you’re new or just starting out as an implementer, this will take up more than one person’s time at first!
-
Willpower/persistence/self-discipline (or lack thereof). If someone has been practicing their profession for decades without ever thinking about changing it up until now, then they may not want to start over again with all these new ways of doing things; after all, familiarity breeds contempt among many professionals who constantly feel like they’re trapped by past mistakes made while trying hard not get caught up in them again.”
Conclusion
While EBP is a goal we should all aspire to, it can be difficult to make it part of our daily practice. With all the demands on nurses today and the changes in health care systems that have happened since the 1980s, there are many obstacles standing between us and making EBP a reality in nursing. We hope this article has shed some light on some of those barriers and how they can be overcome through better education and support from other professionals.
