Introduction
A servant leader is a type of leader who exhibits actions and behaviors that are aligned with the values of humility, empathy and self-sacrifice. These principles encompass an individual’s ability to effectively manage their own emotions and relationships with others in order to achieve more effective results for the organization as well as themselves personally. A servant leader’s primary goal is to help others through acts of service rather than gain recognition for themselves by personal gain or material reward.
Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is the ability to know yourself and your strengths, weaknesses, values and beliefs.

Self-awareness is essential because it allows you to be conscious of who you are as a person and what motivates you.
Self-awareness also allows people who want to become servants leaders or servants (or any other type of leader) to understand their own emotional needs so they can better work with others around them in order for everyone’s needs to be met.
Humility
Humility is a virtue that is often overlooked. The servant leader must be humble because they are servants to their followers and employees, not leaders. Therefore, humility is an essential quality for a servant leader to possess.
Humility can be defined as: “the quality or state of being humble.” It’s an important aspect of leadership because it allows you to see yourself through others’ eyes rather than your own ego-driven perspective on things. For example, if you were hosting an event for your company and someone asked you how many people attended the event (which would be no one), then how would you respond? Would it sound arrogant if someone asked this question? Or would it be more believable if they said there weren’t enough chairs available so everyone had to stand around awkwardly while they waited until another room was available?
When we think about humility in relation with serving others instead of ourselves first—whether at work or home—it brings us back down from those lofty heights we may have been trying too hard climb up before realizing what lies beneath those clouds: nothing but air!
Empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand and share someone else’s feelings and perspectives. This includes understanding how they feel, why they are feeling that way, what might be going on in their head at any given moment, and so on. If you want to be a servant leader, then empathy is one of the most important traits to develop as a servant leader!
To illustrate: imagine if your boss asked you for help with something but didn’t explain what exactly needed doing or why he/she needed it done this way instead of another way (e.g., “I’m looking for someone who can fix these websites”). You’d probably assume that something was wrong with your work because there wasn’t enough information about where things went wrong during testing or otherwise—but maybe there really wasn’t anything wrong with it at all!
Self-Sacrifice
Self-sacrifice is the ability to put the needs of others before your own. It’s a natural consequence of humility, which means that you are humble enough to accept that your needs aren’t as important as others’.
Self-sacrifice shows empathy and compassion. If you truly care about another person, then you would do anything necessary to help them—even if it hurts you in the process!
