Types of traditional and horizontal organization structure
Introduction
Organization structure is an important part of any business. It’s a way for your employees to know what they’re doing, who their boss is and how much power each employee has over the company. In this article, I’ll go over some different types of traditional and horizontal organization structures that you might find in your own workplace or industry.
Traditional Organization Structure
A traditional organization structure is one in which authority and responsibility are clearly defined, and each person reports to a superior who has the power to hire, fire, promote or assign work. Traditional organizations are often hierarchical in shape with a clear chain of command.
1. Line Organization
Line organization is the simplest type of structure. It has a single chain of command, with each employee reporting to a superior and each job being performed by someone else. In this model, there are no detailed descriptions or hierarchies—each worker knows what he or she does and where it fits in the overall scheme. This can be especially useful when implementing new technologies or processes that require specialized skillsets; line organizations tend to be better suited to these types of tasks than traditional ones because they’re more focused on getting things done quickly than maintaining rigid hierarchies (which can slow down an organization).
Because lines have such clear chains of command, they’re also often used by large corporations looking for ways to streamline operations while still maintaining employee autonomy and flexibility within their teams; however if you want something more structured than this type might provide then consider vertical organizations instead!
2. Line and Staff Organization
Line and Staff Organization
A line organization is responsible for the production of goods or services. The line manager is responsible for ensuring that the company has enough resources to produce these goods or services and will not be able to meet its obligations if it cannot do so. The staff member works directly under a line manager, providing support services such as accounting, human resources and marketing.
3. Functional Organization
The third type of organization structure is a functional organization. This is the most common structure for companies that have grown large and need to be able to perform many functions, such as marketing or production. In this type of organization, each function has its own department with employees who report directly to their managers. The departments are independent from each other so they don’t have any formal communication with each other except through administrative tasks like filling out reports or submitting expense reimbursements.
For example:
-
Marketing Department: Creates ads & sends them out via email newsletter
-
Finance Department: Creates financial reports using accounting software
-
Purchasing Department: Buys supplies for manufacturing process
4. Projectized Organization
Projectized organization is a type of traditional organization structure that focuses on the project, not on individual employees. Teams are assigned to projects, and team members may be from different departments or locations within an organization. Some projects require multiple teams working together as part of a single entity: for example, if you’re developing software that’s being used by multiple people in different locations (like your company’s headquarters), then you might want them all working together under one roof—which would be considered projectized organization structure.
Horizontal Organization Structure
Horizontal organization structure is a management structure that divides the company into teams. Each team is in charge of specific functions or projects. Teams are organized by function and report to a project manager, who directs their work as they complete a project.
Teams can be further broken down into sub-teams focused on different aspects of your product or service offering, such as marketing, sales & distribution (S&D), finance and IT.
Types of Horizontal Organization Structure
A horizontal organization structure is a type of organization that is usually found in large corporations. These organizations are organized by function and are designed to meet the needs of the customer. The horizontal organization structure is often used when a company has multiple divisions and each division is responsible for a specific product or service.
In this type of structure, there are no directors or managers overseeing employees; instead there are coordinators who oversee various departments within their group (such as production, marketing, finance).
Conclusion
There are many types of traditional and horizontal organization structure that you can choose from. The best way to figure out which one suits your company best is by asking yourself some questions: “What type of company culture do we want?” “How big is our team?” and “What resources do we have available to us?”
