Theories on how disease is caused
HLT515 Social Behavior and Cultural Factor in Public Health
Week 2 Discussion
DQ1
Present one theory or model within the field of public health which describes either how people maintain health and/or how illness is caused? Presentation of the theory or model may be submitted in graphic or narrative format. Even if this is not your personal viewpoint/belief, how can these multiple theories and models be beneficial to public health professionals? It is not appropriate to repeat one that has already been posted unless you are providing new information. Review all peer submissions and become familiar with the multiple theories and models. Respond to three peers’s posts asking any questions or verifying your analysis of the theory/model.

Theories on how disease is caused
Introduction
Humans have been trying to understand how diseases are caused since the dawn of time. These theories are based on observation, and often times they contradict one another. In this article, we will explore some of the most popular theories about disease and see how each one compares against one another.
The miasma theory
The miasma theory, which was the most common theory of disease during the 19th century, was based on the idea that disease is caused by “bad air” or a “bad miasma.” This theory was abandoned by the end of the century as scientists began to recognize germs as being responsible for infectious agents.
Scientists began to recognize the importance of sanitation and hygiene in preventing disease. The first step was identifying the cause of disease, which was accomplished with Louis Pasteur’s germ theory.
The germ theory
The Germ Theory
The germ theory of disease is the idea that microorganisms (germs) cause disease. It’s a pretty simple concept: germs are tiny microorganisms that can be transmitted from person to person and cause illness. These germs are killed by antibiotics, but some still survive in your body even after being treated with an antibiotic. Hand sanitizer gels can also kill some of these germs, so if you’re worried about getting sick, use it!
The germ theory of disease was developed by a German physician named Robert Koch. He showed that when bacteria from a diseased person are injected into a healthy person, it causes illness.
Immunity
Immunity is the body’s defense mechanism against disease. The immune system protects us from germs and other harmful substances, such as bacteria or viruses. Immunity can be weakened by disease or illness, but it can also be strengthened by a healthy lifestyle.
When your body is healthy and well-nourished, there are no signs of any infections like colds or flu symptoms in your throat or nose; this means you have strong immune defenses against these illnesses!
The concept of disease
Disease is a state of impaired health. It’s not just the presence of symptoms; it’s what causes them and how they affect your body or mind. You can have a disease that affects only one part of your body, like diabetes or Parkinson’s disease (PD), or you might have an illness that affects all parts of your body, like heart disease or cancer.
The term “disease” is often used interchangeably with the terms “illness” and “disorder”. However, these three terms are not identical. An illness is any deviation from normal health or well-being. A disorder is a disease or condition that impairs function or structure of your body or mind.
There have been many theories through history about how to explain the cause of certain diseases.
There have been many theories through history about how to explain the cause of certain diseases. Some examples include:
-
Vaccination – This theory was first proposed in 1796 by Edward Jenner, who found that inoculating people with cowpox (a mild form of smallpox) could protect them from developing full-blown smallpox disease. However, this theory was not widely accepted until after Pasteur proved it correct in his work on sterilizing milk using heat and filtration in 1884.
-
Herd immunity – This theory states that if enough members are vaccinated against a particular disease, then there will be less chance for that person or group to contract it because their bodies’ immune systems have already been prepared for battle against the disease before it actually strikes them down!
Conclusion
We have covered a lot of different theories over the years, and there are many more to come. It’s important to remember that no matter what your theory is, we all share one thing in common: We want answers!
