Culture is the set of beliefs, values, norms and behaviors that people share. It can be seen as a group’s collective understanding of itself and the world around them. The role of culture in health is an important topic to consider because it affects peoples’ health in many ways. Some cultures may have different ideas about death, dying, grief and bereavement than others do; for example some believe that there is a person inside your body called “the soul” who lives on after death or dies when their body dies (e.g., Native American tribes). Other cultures may view sex as a sacred act not meant for public consumption; however this does not mean that these same people don’t engage in sexual behavior at all (e.g., Muslim societies).
