Purpose

The purpose of this study was to identify the role of a nurse manager in integrating the staff in the strategic planning process.

Methods

The study design was a cross-sectional study. The research questions were: does the role of a nurse manager in integrating staff in the strategic planning process result in improved quality, effectiveness and efficiency?

The population consisted of all nurses working at one hospital in Turkey (n=15). Sampling method was purposive sampling, as we wanted to include all units that were involved with clinical management. Sampling frame included all clinical units within our hospital system, with permission for us to contact them about participation if necessary. Data collection methods included face-to-face interviews with each participant followed by a self-administered questionnaire which covered basic demographic information as well as aspects related to their role as manager (i) on one hand; and (ii) on the other hand.*

Results

The results of this study showed that the nurses were able to integrate their roles within the strategic planning process and that they had positive attitudes toward it.

Discussion and conclusions

The research results suggest that nurses are more knowledgeable about health care than the general population. This knowledge can be used to improve health care services by providing better information and education, which will help patients make better decisions about their health.

In conclusion, it is important for nurses to be involved in strategic planning because they have extensive knowledge of their field and can help improve patient care through providing accurate information on a variety of topics related to clinical practice.
