The Profession of Social Work from Past to Present to Future
Social work is a profession that has its roots in the past, is vitally important in the present, and will be even more crucial in the future. The first social workers were likely those who provided aid to poor and needy families during the Industrial Revolution. But the field has since evolved and expanded to encompass a wide range of populations and problems. Today, social workers can be found in hospitals, schools, private practices, and more. They work with individuals, families, groups, and communities to help address a variety of issues. And as our world changes, so too will the profession of social work. In this blog post, we will take a look at the profession of social work from past to present to future. We will explore its origins, how it has changed over time, and what challenges and opportunities it faces in the years ahead.
A brief history of social work
Social work is a profession that has its roots in the 1800s. The Industrial Revolution was underway and society was undergoing great changes. There were more people living in cities, working in factories, and struggling to make ends meet. At the same time, there were also increasing numbers of people who were poor, homeless, and mentally ill.
In response to these challenges, a group of religious leaders and activists founded the Charity Organisation Society (COS) in London in 1869. The COS believed that poverty was caused by individual moral failings and that the solution was to provide people with practical help and advice so they could help themselves. This approach came to be known as ‘casework’.
The COS quickly established itself as a leading force in social work and its ideas spread to other countries, including the United States. In 1898, the US Congress passed the Social Security Act, which provided federal funding for programs to help the elderly, disabled, and unemployed. This marked the beginning of the modern US welfare system.
In the early 1900s, social work became increasingly professionalized. Universities began offering courses in social work and organizations such as the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) were founded to set standards for training and practice.
During the first half of the 20th century, social work focused on helping individuals and families cope with difficult life circumstances, such as poverty, illness, or bereavement. In the 1950s and 1960s, however, social
