The Four Spheres of Political Action in Nursing
Introduction
We all have a role to play in improving healthcare. As nurses, we can take action in four spheres of influence: personal, workplace and community, as well as political.
Personal sphere – This is what you do as an individual member of society.
Personal sphere – This is what you do as an individual member of society. It’s your home, where you live and work; it’s the space where you feel most comfortable and have the most control over your life.
The personal sphere can be broken down into four areas: your physical environment (where people live), relationships with others (e.g., friends and family), job/place of employment (where one earns income), and leisure activities (what one enjoys doing). These four spheres represent areas in which we all interact with other people on a daily basis—whether we’re talking about our coworkers at work or someone we meet at a party—and each has its own set of expectations for behavior within them.
Workplace Sphere – This is what you do in your workplace, as a working nurse.
The workplace sphere is all about improving healthcare in the workplace. It’s about how you can improve your own nursing practice and the working environment for yourself, your colleagues and patients.
It’s also important to remember that this sphere includes everything related to healthcare in general. For example:
-
How can we make sure nurses have enough time for their patients?
-
Is there anything else we could do to help them feel more comfortable?
Community Sphere – This is what you do with others in your community.
The Community Sphere is defined by a shared interest or goal. This is where you get involved in your community and help others with the same goals.
You can find opportunities to get involved in this sphere by looking for organizations that align with your own beliefs and values, as well as those who share similar interests, needs or goals. You can also join a volunteer organization if there isn’t one already that fits those criteria for you!
How do I measure the impact of my community action?
Political Sphere
The political sphere is the realm of social, economic and political activity. It can be thought of as a sphere that exists outside of nursing and is largely independent from it. However, there are many ways in which nurses can participate in this sphere by working with other groups and individuals who also want to make a difference in their communities.
Examples include:
-
Working on campaigns at the local level
-
Participating in political committees within hospitals or health systems
There are four spheres of influence where we can take action to improve healthcare.
There are four spheres of influence where we can take action to improve healthcare. The first is the medical sphere, which is responsible for bringing patients and healthcare providers together in order to provide them with quality care.
The second sphere of influence is the political sphere, which includes all aspects of government policy including funding and regulation. This area has the potential to positively impact the lives of millions if it’s used effectively.
The third sphere connects education with practice so that nurses have more knowledge about what they’re doing when they work with their patients (or clients). They can use this knowledge later on when making decisions about how best to care for someone else who needs help or assistance from someone else who knows what they’re doing!
Conclusion
These four spheres of political action are important to nurses, and there is much we can do in each sphere. Nurses can take action in their personal sphere by seeking out opportunities for self-improvement, listening more deeply to what others say, and being willing to learn. It’s also important for nurses to practice empathy towards ourselves and others so as not only to act with compassion but also understand why people do what they do. Finally nurses should be active participants in the community sphere where we can advocate for changes that make life better for everyone who lives there.
