The difference between the three paradigms: human needs, interactive, and unitary process
Introduction
The three paradigms of nursing theory are important to understand. They define what nurses do, how they do it and why they do it. The human needs paradigm, interactive process and unitary process models can help you understand your role within the profession of nursing.
The human needs paradigm
In the human needs paradigm, nursing is based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The most important part of nursing is to help patients reach self-actualization. Self-actualization means that a patient becomes his or herself and can live a fulfilling life without suffering from psychological problems or emotional issues.
In this view, there are five levels in Maslow’s hierarchy: physiological needs (bodily), safety/security (belonging), social/interpersonal (love/relationships), esteem/self-actualization (self-confidence).
You can see how these levels relate to each other by looking at the following chart:
The interactive paradigm
The interactive paradigm is based on the idea that people are active in their own situations. They have the ability to make choices and decisions, solve problems and communicate with others. In this paradigm, individuals are able to make choices about their own health care as well as the type of care they would like to receive from physicians or other medical professionals.
The interactive paradigm also assumes that individuals have the capacity for rational thought and therefore can use this ability when making decisions about their health care needs (e.g., “I want my wife to get tested for breast cancer”). This paradigm stresses that every patient has rights when it comes down to deciding what kind of treatment should be given him/her based on his/her preferences; however this does not necessarily mean he/she will always get exactly what he wants because there may be constraints placed upon him by other factors such as time constraints or cost considerations etcetera…
The unitary process paradigm
The unitary process paradigm is based on the idea that the nursing process is a unitary, holistic and systematic process. In this paradigm, nurses are expected to be able to plan for an entire patient’s care needs from assessment through discharge. The nurse understands how each individual patient will respond to care by understanding the concept of individuality in relation to population health management (PHM).
This paradigm is based on four principles:
-
Individuality – every person has unique needs;
-
Population Health Management (PHM) – understanding how one group differs from another;
-
Holistic Nursing Skills – recognizing that every situation requires different skills;
-
Systematic Planning/Sequential Care Delivery
The three paradigms are important to different nursing theories
The three paradigms are important to different nursing theories. The human needs paradigm is used by nursing theories that focus on individual health and wellness. These theories stress the importance of understanding a patient’s needs, as well as providing them with appropriate care.
The interactive paradigm is used by nursing theories that focus on the relationship between patient and nurse. These theories say that communication between both parties is key in order for patients to receive proper care and treatment—and this requires an open dialogue between them so they can understand their own bodies better (and vice versa).
Finally, unitary process paradigms focus on holistic approaches to patient care based on the idea that all aspects of our lives must be taken into account when treating someone else; this includes not just physical symptoms but also mental ones like anxiety or depression.”
Conclusion
I hope this has been helpful in showing you what the three paradigms are. I’ve only briefly touched on each one here, but they are very important to understanding nursing theory and practice.
