Forms of Social Inequalities in the United States
Introduction
In the United States, it’s not just income inequality that’s a problem. There are also social inequalities that can have devastating impacts on people’s lives. These include racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination based on race, culture or gender identity; sexual orientation; disability status; geography (such as where someone lives); age; or socioeconomic status (such as being wealthy or poor).
Race
Race is a social construct. It does not exist in nature and it’s not biological. We’re all linked by our family history, but race is based on skin color and ancestry, not genetics or DNA.
Race can be difficult to define because of differences in language around the world; however, there are four main races recognized by most scientists: Caucasoid (white), Mongoloid (yellow-brown), Negroid (dark brown) and Australoid (red). These categories are based on geography as well as physical appearance—they don’t match up with what you might expect from looking at someone’s face! For example: If you have dark skinned parents then it means that your genes come from Africa or Asia; however if both parents have light skin then their genes may come from Europe rather than Africa or Asia.”
Culture
Culture is a system of shared beliefs, values, behaviors and artifacts that members of a group learn from each other. Culture consists of the patterns of thought and behavior that people use to interpret their environment; it helps define who we are as individuals. Culture can be defined as an individual’s perception of what’s important, including how they see themselves in relation to others. For example: If you live anywhere in North America (especially Canada), you have probably heard the phrase “Canadian” at some point in your life—and if you’re like most Americans (or Canadians!), this phrase probably conjures up images of maple syrup pancakes or Tim Hortons coffee cups! But did you know there are actually many different cultural groups within our country? Some examples include First Nations people who belong exclusively to one tribe; American Indians who identify by more than one tribe; Hispanic immigrants whose ancestors came from Latin America centuries ago; Asian-Americans who were born here but trace their ancestry back generations before them through immigration laws passed during World War II…
Gender
Women in the United States earn less than men, and this gap is growing. Women’s wages have not kept pace with those of men for decades, even though women make up more than half of the workforce. In fact, on average women only make 78 cents to every dollar that a man earns (1). This means that if you’re working full time and earning $30k per year, your paycheck will be $27k—and it gets worse if you have kids!
It’s important to note that while many factors contribute to this inequality between genders (including stereotypes), being female plays an important role here. A recent study showed that when male- or female-dominated jobs are matched up statistically against each other by job title alone without considering any other factors such as experience level or education level then there was still significant difference between both groups’ salaries after controlling for other variables like education level
Sexual orientation
Sexual orientation is not a choice. It’s not a mental illness, and it doesn’t make you any less of a person. Sexual orientation refers to who you are attracted to romantically, sexually and/or emotionally. Your sexual orientation can be fluid—you may feel attraction for more than one gender at different points in your life—and even though it’s natural for people to change their feelings over time (for example, from being straight or gay), the way we define ourselves as LGBT+ individuals has changed significantly since our ancestors first discovered their own sexuality thousands of years ago.
Disability
The term “disability” is a social construct. It refers to a condition or characteristic that is experienced by an individual and affects their day-to-day life or ability to perform certain tasks. Disability does not refer to any particular trait, personal problem or punishment from God—it’s simply how society is built.
The concept of disability originated in the 19th century with ideas about “physical degeneracy” and “moral degeneracy,” which were used by those who wanted to exclude non-white people from society because they believed they would bring destruction upon it if allowed into positions of power and influence (which they did). This belief was later expanded upon by eugenicists who believed that certain races had superior genetic qualities over others; these ideas influenced many policies affecting racial minorities over time such as laws prohibiting interracial marriage (now known as miscegenation), sterilization programs aimed at people living with HIV/AIDS (now known as compulsory medical treatment), etc…
Geography
Geographic locations play a big role in social inequality, so it’s important to understand how geography affects people and their opportunities. There are many ways that geographic barriers can affect individuals’ lives:
-
A person who lives in an area with poor public transportation may have trouble getting to work or school.
-
People who live far from the city center may not be able to gain access to good jobs or education opportunities because they don’t have reliable transportation options available.
These examples show how geographic areas can be barriers for those seeking employment and quality education opportunities, but even places like these aren’t necessarily devoid of opportunity for all residents—there are still areas where people can succeed if they’re willing to invest time, money and effort into their future careers!
We still have a long way to go.
We still have a long way to go. Many forms of inequality remain, and people must work to reduce them. The government needs to do more too—in particular, it should be working on behalf of those who are disadvantaged.
Conclusion
We have made incredible strides in equality over the past few decades, but there is still much work to be done. We must continue to fight for social justice and equality for all people, regardless of their race, gender or sexual orientation.
