Introduction

Nursing is a broad field, and it’s important to understand the roles nurses play in different facilities. Nurse practitioners (or NPs) specialize in some of the most complex areas of nursing. Their primary responsibility is to provide medical care and treat patients who have complex medical needs or are at risk for chronic disease. NPs also manage other healthcare professionals’ tasks, such as providing medication management and order entry, so they’re often known as “coordinators.” The scope of practice for nurse practitioners can vary depending on where they work and their type of certification (such as RPN or CRNP). Other specialty nurses may include advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), who have additional training beyond that required by their state licenses; emergency department nurses; flight nurses; neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses; psychiatric rehabilitation practitioner (PRP); nurse anesthetists and more!

Advanced practice registered nurse

Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are licensed nurses who have completed a master’s degree in nursing and have met the requirements of the state in which they practice. APN programs typically take two years to complete, with students learning advanced concepts related to patient care. The APRN can then choose an area of specialization based on their interests and skillset.

APRNs work alongside other nurses and physicians at hospitals, clinics or other healthcare facilities where they provide care for patients with complex needs such as those suffering from cancer or arthritis.

Ambulatory care nurse

Ambulatory care nurses are registered nurses who work in a clinic, office or hospital setting. They specialize in areas such as diabetes, hypertension and heart failure.

Community health nurse

Community health nurses provide primary care, disease prevention and health promotion services to individuals and families in the community. They work in a variety of settings including schools, workplaces and clinics. Community health nurses may provide services to individuals and families with special needs such as people with mental illness or substance abuse problems.

Critical care nurse

Critical care nurses are health professionals who provide medical care to patients in a hospital or other healthcare facility. They work alongside doctors and other healthcare practitioners to provide basic life support, monitor the patient’s condition, and coordinate the transfer of the patient from one location to another. Critical care nurses can be found at any level of training, but they usually specialize in one area of specialty—from intensive care unit (ICU) nurses who specialize in caring for critically ill patients through ICU-level critical care nursing to geriatric intensivist nurses who focus on providing high-level care for older adults with complex medical problems.

Critical Care Nurse Role:

Emergency department nurse
