Quality and Sustainability in Nursing
Introduction
Quality and sustainability are two important concepts in health care. They can influence your decisions, but they also require you to think about what’s best for the patient. In this article, we’ll explore these concepts and how they relate to nursing.
What are quality and sustainability?
Quality and sustainability are both important terms in the field of nursing. Quality is the degree to which something is useful, effective or successful. Sustainability refers to how well a system or process can continue to function over time.
Quality and sustainability are not always synonymous with one another; it’s possible for a system with high quality standards but low environmental impact (like natural gas) to be sustainable at once while also being high quality. However, when we talk about quality vs sustainability—or any other kind of comparison between two things—it’s important to note that these terms aren’t interchangeable: one does not necessarily lead directly into another without some sort of context involved!
Can you think of times when these values diverted you or your organization from the patient-centered path?
Think of a time when you, or your organization, were not patient-centered. What happened and how did it impact the patient? How did it impact you? What could you have done differently? What could you have done differently? How does this relate to sustainability? We’re all familiar with the concept of “the law of unintended consequences.” For example, when you focus on quality over sustainability, what can happen is that patients are not served well because your organization loses sight of its mission and vision.
Can you list some ways to ensure that these two values guide your decisions moving forward?
-
Use evidence-based practice.
-
Use patient-centered care.
-
Use a team approach to care delivery, in order to ensure that all of your stakeholders are working together toward the same goals and objectives.
-
You can also use quality improvement principles as a basis for your decisions moving forward. For example, you can use the PDSA cycle to ensure that you are identifying problems, creating solutions and testing them in order to see if they work. You can also use lean thinking principles as a guide for your decisions moving forward.
Quality and sustainability are important considerations when looking at patient care.
Quality and sustainability are important considerations when looking at patient care. Quality means that the patient is getting the right care at the right time, while sustainability means that this care will last for years to come. In order to ensure quality care, you have to take into consideration your patients’ needs and preferences as well as their abilities.
It’s also important to keep in mind that quality nursing involves more than just providing physical assistance; it also includes emotional support and other types of clinical services like medication management or education about chronic conditions (like diabetes). For example, if a patient needs an injection of insulin but is afraid of needles, you can help by gently holding their hand and talking to them about how it’s going to feel. This type of support can make all the difference in helping someone cope with their condition.
Conclusion
As we’ve seen, it can be easy to get caught up in the day-to-day demands of patient care. But by taking a step back and reviewing your practice, you can make sure that quality and sustainability are guiding your decisions about how to provide the best care for each individual patient.
