Think about what you have learned with regard to the five critical steps of evidence-based practice. In a formal paper of 500-750 words, address the following:

Part 1: Defining the Problem

1. Identify and describe one topic that may resolve a patient-care-quality problem or issue.
2. Draft a possible problem statement.
3. Describe a problem. Explain why it is a problem, and why it is significant to your discipline. Use the literature you gathered as support for why this is a problem in relation to your practice. The problem should focus on the resolution of an issue significant to improving patient care.
4. Draft a purpose statement in relation to your problem statement that states what you hope to accomplish if you implemented this project.

Part 2: Defining a Searchable, Answerable Question

From what you wrote about your problem and purpose, develop searchable questions using the PICOT format that will be the basis for your implementation plan. Word count is not relative in this section.  Include evidence-based resources.

Locate a minimum of 15 peer-reviewed articles that describe the problem or issue and that support the proposed solution. Eight of the 15 articles must be research-based (i.e., a study which is qualitative, quantitative, descriptive, or longitudinal).

The “Table of Evidence” document is a tool you can use to organize information from the study articles you have chosen for your literature review. Use this tool as a guide to ensure you have captured the key information that should be incorporated into your literature review narrative.

Begin your search for literature by utilizing the databases located in the GCU Library. Contact your instructor, the librarian, or library staff for additional researching tips and keyword suggestions.

Preview each of the 15 articles chosen by reading the article abstracts and summaries. Article abstracts and summaries provide a concise description of the topic, research outcomes, and significance of findings.

Analysis and Appraisal

Write an analysis and appraisal (1,500-2,000 words): This section should build and support your case, in the reader’s mind, of why your problem, purpose, and proposed solution are valid.

Remember, you are building an argument to prove your case to do this project; this is not simply an article review.

Analyze and appraise the selected articles to support your problem, purpose, and solution. Appraise each article by answering the following questions (one to two sentences is sufficient to answer each question):

1. How does the article describe the nature of the problem, issue, or deficit you have identified?
2. Does the article provide statistical information to demonstrate the gravity of the issue, problem, or deficit?
3. What are some examples of morbidity, mortality, and rate of incidence or rate of occurrence in the general population?
4. Does the article support your proposed change?

Group the analyses based on the content of the articles and the support each article provides for your project.

Incorporating a Theory

In addition to the review of the literature and theory paper, write a paper of 250-500 words in which you:

1. Find a theory that will assist you in your implementation or support your solution to your problem.
2. Describe this theory in simple terms.
3. Describe why this theory supports your project.
4. Describe how you will incorporate this theory.

Problem, Purpose, and the Question: Evidence-Based-Practice Proposal

Introduction

In this article, I will explain the problem, purpose, and question of an evidence-based practice proposal. I will also give some examples of such proposals so you can better understand what it means for them to be or not be evidence-based. Finally, I will provide examples of each component by identifying where they apply in a particular case study and why these cases are appropriate for this type of analysis.

Problem

The problem statement is the most important part of an EBP proposal because it tells a story about how your solution will help. This story should be clear and easy for readers to understand, so that they can see what value you bring to the table.

When writing your problem statement, remember that there are three types of problems: practical (what do we want?), conceptual (how do we achieve it?), and ethical/political (why should this matter?)

Purpose

• Purpose: State the purpose of your research. This can be a brief statement or more detailed explanation, depending on your audience and style.

• Question: Describe what you are asking, why you are asking it, and who will answer it (if there is an audience). If you’re creating an online survey, include this information in the question text so people know what they’re signing up for. They may have questions about whether or not they should participate!

Question

The first step in creating an evidence-based practice proposal is to define the problem. What is the purpose of your proposal? Who will benefit from it, and why? How will you address the needs of these beneficiaries?

Once you’ve answered these questions, you can begin to formulate a plan for addressing them. In many cases, this involves gathering information about the problem and its causes (what are we trying to solve?), then analyzing that data using one or more relevant approaches (how do we know if our approach was effective?). Once this analysis has been completed, it becomes critical for practitioners who are designing interventions for patients with certain health conditions or diseases—such as diabetes management—to determine whether those interventions have been effective at reducing medical costs associated with those conditions/diseases. This may require collecting additional data over time so as not only determine whether their initial efforts were effective but also how much improvement there has been since then; otherwise known as “trends” analysis

Evidence-based practice proposal

The evidence-based practice proposal is a framework for defining the problem, purpose and question of your research. It can be used as an outline for identifying what data you need to collect in order to answer your questions. This document should also include information about how you will analyze that data once it has been collected (e.g., through coding or statistical analysis).

An example of an evidence-based practice proposal might look like this:

• Problem: “How can we improve access to healthy food options at our grocery store?”

• Purpose: “To determine if there are barriers preventing people from having access to healthy foods at our grocery store by analyzing survey results collected over time during business hours on weekdays between 9 am – 5 pm when patrons may visit most often during those times.”

Takeaway:

This is a great way to start thinking about evidence-based practice. What does it mean?

• Evidence-based practice is a process of using research to inform your practice. It’s not about following a cookbook, but rather learning from the research and then using that knowledge to guide your decisions.

Conclusion

There are many valid and important uses of evidence-based practice in the world of education. Unfortunately, this movement has not gained mainstream acceptance as quickly as many would like. The problem is that people have gotten used to the idea that “one size fits all” when it comes to education and don’t want change because they believe it will lead to their downfall rather than success. This is why we must continue working hard at convincing people who haven’t heard about EBP yet how beneficial it can be for everyone involved!
