Many careers are influenced by government regulations. Health care is one of those careers, similar to education, where the workers are hesitant to be involved in the political process. If we are to advance the cause of quality patient care it becomes imminent that doctorally prepared advanced practice nurses get involved in the political process.
This assignment will prepare you to determine what policy you may want to be involved in changing by creating an objective policy brief. A policy brief is a concise summary of a particular issue, the policy options to deal with it, and some recommendations on the best option. This assignment will be two parts.

Political Activism in the Nursing Profession
Introduction
The nursing profession is a highly political one. Nurses have long been involved in community activism and public issues, from advocating for better health care to helping people stay in their homes as long as possible. This article will explore how nurses can get involved with politics at all levels of government, including local and state officials; national organizations like the American Nurses Association (ANA); and anything between those two extremes!
Be informed.
As a nurse, you should be aware of current events in the world and within your community. You might want to read about what’s going on at work, or learn about how the nursing profession is doing overall.
It is important for nurses to know what’s happening in their professional lives as well.
Join a nursing organization.
It’s important to support your local and national nursing associations.
If you’re interested in supporting the causes you care about, consider joining a professional association that supports those interests.
Engage in grassroots activism.
-
Be willing to get involved. Sometimes, it’s best to take action instead of waiting for others to do so.
-
Be confident in your beliefs and opinions. You may not always be right, but you should be able to stand up for yourself and speak out when necessary.
-
Support your colleagues when they ask questions or share their experiences with you—and don’t be afraid of asking any question yourself!
Support your local politicians.
You can make a difference by supporting your local politicians who support nurses and healthcare. If you’re not sure who these people are, ask around. They might be running for office or already in office!
Here are some examples:
-
A politician who supports nurses is someone like [Jay Inslee], Governor of Washington State, who signed a law that requires hospitals to provide 24/7 access to nursing staff during emergencies (like heart attacks). This is great because it means more nurses get to stay home with their families during weekends so they don’t have to go into work at night when they could be sleeping instead.
-
Another example would be [Azar]. As Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Trump’s administration he oversaw policies that made it easier for people with pre-existing conditions like diabetes or cancer as well as pregnant women without insurance coverage before Obamacare went into effect rather than denying them care altogether while making up excuses why they couldn’t get treatment themselves instead of paying out-of-pocket costs which often proves difficult due being too expensive financially unless there are subsidies available beforehand.”
Stay connected with other nurses.
It is important to stay connected with other nurses. Nursing organizations such as the American Nurses Association and the National Nurses Organizing Committee (NNOC) can provide you with opportunities to network with other nurses, share ideas on how to improve patient care, and connect at professional conferences. Online communities like Reddit’s r/Nursing have also become popular places for nurses to gather information and support each other in their careers.
You should also make time every week or month for a cup of coffee with fellow nurses who may be new at your hospital or practice location—it will help build relationships that could last for decades!
Know what’s going on in the world, in your community, and at your job.
The nursing profession has a lot of work to do. You can help by staying informed about what’s going on in the world, in your community and at your job.
Let’s start with looking at current events:
-
Know what’s happening in your state or country. You might want to follow a political party or candidate that stands out from others on important issues like climate change or healthcare reform. If there are protests going on near where you live, find out if they’re related to one specific issue (like global warming) or if they’re protesting something more generalized like budget cuts for social services agencies like schools and hospitals. If there is an ongoing conflict between two groups—for example between Israelis and Palestinians over land rights—find out how much progress has been made toward peace agreements since last year’s war ended after two years of fighting!
Conclusion
If you are a nurse interested in political activism, it is important to know what’s going on in your community and the world. You can use this information to make decisions about how best to act, both individually and as part of an organization.
