I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but when it comes down to it, educational outcomes are determined by many factors beyond the control of students themselves. The average American spends 13 years in school, but there are very real differences in educational attainment between groups of people. Whether someone has a high-school diploma, bachelor’s degree or anything in between depends on many factors beyond their control—including family income and education levels. Parents’ income and education levels have an oversized impact on the likelihood that a child will graduate from high school and go to college. Income is linked to education at every level, from children to adults; girls often do better than boys because they’re asked to do more work at home while boys are given less responsibility at home so they have more time for other activities outside of schoolwork.”

You may have heard the statistic that people spend 13 years in school, but it’s important to be aware of some of the factors that influence educational attainment. The average American spends 7 years in elementary school, 4 years in high school, and 1 year at college or university. In fact, studies show that there are significant differences between groups of people when it comes to their educational outcomes. For example:

For example, if you have a low-income family and your children grow up without access to quality preschool or Head Start programs (or any other resources), they will likely experience worse outcomes than their wealthier counterparts who receive those services early on in life—and this can have long-term effects on their likelihood of graduating from high school or college as well as earning higher wages later on in life
