Topic 7 Benchmark Assignment Comprehensive Assessment Part Two: Outcomes and Reflection
The DNP comprehensive assessment provides learners the opportunity to demonstrate their achievement of core and specialty DNP competencies. It is also an appraisal of learners’ ability to integrate and synthesize knowledge within the context of their scholarly and practice interests and their readiness to complete the DPI project. The two-part comprehensive assessment includes evaluation of work completed throughout the program and a final synthesis and self-reflection demonstrating achievement of programmatic outcomes. In Part One of the assessment, learners were required to collect and review coursework deliverables and practice immersion hours completed in the program thus far. In Part Two, learners are required to synthesize and reflect on their learning and prioritize work for their DPI project.
General Requirements:
Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment:
- Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments. The APA Style Guide is located in the Student Success Center.
- This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

To complete Part Two of the DNP comprehensive assessment:
Use the information collected in the competency matrix from Comprehensive Assessment Part One to address the following prompts as directed. Each response should be 500-750 words. Your responses should concisely demonstrate synthesis of knowledge gained in the program and the relevant application of knowledge into your practice. Listening to others.
Listening is a skill that nurses can use to help their patients. Nurses must listen to understand, learn and be heard. They also need to listen in order to appreciate their patients and they should listen so they can be understood by others.
Nurses are good listeners because they have empathy for those around them and understand what is important for each individual patient’s needs.
Open communication.

Listening to others. As a leader, it is important to be open to new ideas and ways of doing things. It’s also important that you listen when others speak up with a suggestion or idea, so that the team can grow together as a whole.

Being open about your own feelings and emotions, as well as those of others on your team. If there are issues among members of the group who have been working together for some time now (and especially if they’ve worked with each other for years), it’s likely that there will be some tension between them at times—but this doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement! A good leader understands how certain situations affect people’s feelings differently from one another; this allows him/herself room for growth while maintaining harmony within his/her workplace environment
Sharing ideas.

Sharing ideas. A leader is a person who leads others to achieve a common goal, and it’s important that leaders share their ideas with others so that they can work together as a team. If you want your team members to be successful, you should listen carefully when someone else has something worthwhile to say—even if it’s something new or different than what you’ve been thinking about yourself!

Listening actively instead of passively listening passively (which means not paying attention). Active listening means taking in everything that someone says without interrupting them or talking over them; this helps show respect for the person who is speaking by allowing him/her time for thought before responding back with an answer or question. The best way for nurses’ leaders themselves become good listeners is by practicing active listening skills with other people around them regularly throughout each day (for example: “Hey John! We’re having lunch here today – let me know when your order comes up”).
Being creative.
Being creative means being able to think of something new or original. Creativity is the ability to come up with ideas and solutions, which is not only about art but also problem solving. Creativity can be applied in many different ways:

Being open to change.
Being open to change is a critical quality of a leader. The ability to evolve and adapt your approach as new information becomes available can be the difference between failure and success in any given situation.
Being open also means being willing to admit when you’re wrong or make an honest mistake, which may mean admitting that what you were doing wasn’t working out so well after all. It’s important not just because it helps others see things differently; but also because if we don’t learn from our mistakes (and keep learning), then they will repeat themselves again and again until they become our new normal—and that isn’t good for anyone!
Being open doesn’t mean being naive either—it means being willing not only apply lessons learned from past experiences but also looking ahead with optimism about what tomorrow may bring!
Taking risks.
Taking risks is a way to learn. Whether you’re learning about yourself, your team, or the world around you, taking risks allows you to gain new insight into what’s going on in these areas. It takes courage and confidence for a nurse leader to take these kinds of risks because they can lead to failure if not done correctly—but this doesn’t mean that all leaders should avoid them altogether!
As noted above, there are many different types of risks: large-scale ones such as quitting a job before its end date; small-scale ones such as making an unpopular decision while at work; self-risking by asking questions that may make people angry with your answers (but also gives those questions closure). Whatever kind of risk it is, always remember that taking any kind will help build character and leadership skills throughout one’s career as well as provide opportunities for growth in other areas like communication skills or problem solving abilities
