NINR’s theme categories that delineate priorities for nursing research
Introduction
NIH’s National Institute for Nursing Research (NINR) has identified 11 key research themes in nursing science. These results were published in a paper titled “Emerging Nursing Research Priorities” and are available here.
Patient and Family Self-Management
Patient and family self-management is a key priority for nursing research. It’s important for all patients, but especially for those with chronic conditions. Nursing is an ideal profession to help patients and families with self-management because nurses have the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to support them throughout their illness or injury.
NINR will continue to work on developing new ways to use technology in order to improve patient outcomes by improving self-management skills through physical therapy interventions such as guided imagery, remote monitoring systems (e.g., smartphone apps), wearable sensors (e.g., heart rate monitors), etc., which can be used by health care providers working in collaboration with caregivers or family members at home when needed most—during times when they’re unable due lack of resources like transportation infrastructure; lack of access due physical disability; lack proper office space; insufficient funding from government agencies such as Medicaid/Medicare programs managed directly by federal government agencies like Health & Human Services Office Of Management And Budget Office Of Information Technology Administration
Diagnosis and Treatment of Pain
Pain is a common symptom of many diseases and can be acute or chronic. Acute pain occurs when tissue damage occurs, inflammation occurs, or illness causes you to lose feeling in your body. If untreated, it may become chronic once the cause has been removed.
Chronic pain refers to long-term ailments that are not caused by acute events but persist over time due to ongoing sources of injury (such as arthritis), degeneration (like osteoarthritis), or nerve irritation resulting from injury to nerves—and may even extend beyond life expectancy if left untreated over years at a time.
Cancer-related pain arises from cancer itself; however cancer treatment itself can also lead to secondary complications that produce new forms of chronic pain such as bone metastases causing bone fractures which means more discomfort since the bone needs replacing with metal pins inserted into place before healing takes place properly thereby creating more problems later down line without proper treatment plan being implemented beforehand!
Cancer Control and Survivorship
Cancer is a leading cause of death in the United States. The National Cancer Institute estimates that about one-third of all deaths from cancer are preventable through early detection, prevention, and treatment. Although some people with cancer may die from their disease or its treatment, many others live longer after diagnosis—and most want to be able to continue living their best lives possible for as long as possible.
As we work toward improving quality of life for patients and survivors through our Cancer Control & Survivorship theme area, we look at how best practices can be applied across different settings (i.e., hospitals versus ambulatory care), different populations (i.e., young adults vs older adults), and across diverse needs such as physical side effects following treatment; emotional distress related to loss or perceived risk posed by cancer; financial stress related to expenses associated with receiving care at home versus hospitalization; social isolation due either directly due to being away from loved ones when diagnosed with this disease or indirectly because family members may have difficulty caring for themselves while caring for someone else who has been diagnosed with this condition
Healthy Aging
Healthy aging is a concept that encompasses the idea of promoting optimal health and well-being throughout life. It emphasizes the importance of having a healthy lifestyle, maintaining physical and mental abilities as one ages, and reducing chronic disease risk factors in older adults.
The National Institutes on Aging (NIA) states that healthy aging is different from healthy living in that it encompasses “an integrated approach to care across multiple settings: home, community, workplace/social environment” [1]. In other words, it’s about thinking holistically about your health needs as you age instead of simply focusing on one area at a time. The NIA also notes that many older adults face challenges related to their overall health such as memory loss or cognitive decline due to Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease; high blood pressure; chronic pain; depression/anxiety disorders; fatigue syndrome among others [2]. These issues can be prevented by maintaining an active lifestyle with regular physical activity such as walking five miles per day (or 150 minutes) which has been shown time after time again in studies conducted over decades across multiple populations including those with arthritis type 2 diabetes mellitus type 2 heart failure COPD COPD COPD COPD COPD COPD COPD COPD
End of Life and Palliative Care
End of life care is the process of providing patient-centered care to individuals with advanced illness, injury or disability who have been diagnosed with a terminal condition. It encompasses all dimensions of life: physical, psychological and social.
Palliative care focuses on relieving pain and other symptoms experienced by patients in order to improve quality-of-life while they still have time left on earth—but it doesn’t address end-of-life issues specifically.
End-of-life issues are often difficult for physicians and nurses alike because they require an understanding of how different interventions can affect both quality of life (QOL) measures such as illness duration; symptom control; functional status; survival expectations among family members; gait velocity; etcetera…
Organ Donation, Transplantation, and Mechanical Circulatory Support
Organ donation is the process of harvesting organs from a deceased person for transplantation into another individual. Transplantation is the transfer of tissue between living organisms, usually for therapeutic purposes. Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) refers to technologies used to maintain circulation and oxygen supply during surgery or other invasive procedures.
NINR’s theme categories that delineate priorities for nursing research are:
-
Organ Donation, Transplantation, and Mechanical Circulatory Support
-
Neonatal Resuscitation Programs/Life-Saving Technologies in Healthy Children
-
Pediatric Critical Care
Health Behaviors and Outcomes
Health behaviors are the actions that people take to maintain their health. They can be influenced by many factors, including education and socioeconomic status (SES), lifestyle factors, family history of disease and genetics.
Health behaviors may include not smoking; eating healthy foods; exercising regularly; getting regular checkups; making sure you get enough sleep each night to feel well rested; taking medications as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist when needed..
Health Literacy
Health literacy is a critical component of quality health care. It’s also a fundamental human right, as it enables people to make informed decisions about their health and participate in the planning of their own care.
Health literacy can be measured by asking patients questions about their understanding of diseases and symptoms, treatment options, risks associated with medication use or procedures (e.g., anesthesia), costs associated with different treatments/procedures, etc., as well as how they access information from providers or other sources (e.g., websites).
Emerging Health Challenges
Nursing research is expected to be increasingly focused on emerging health challenges, including:
-
Infectious diseases – The sudden increase in the number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has led to an increased demand for effective treatment options. This has resulted in a significant increase in the number of people who are hospitalized with infections caused by these organisms.
-
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) – NCDs include cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus, which account for more than 80% of all deaths worldwide each year. In addition, these conditions account for more than one-third of the total years lived with disability and premature death worldwide; they are also associated with high levels of cost burden both within countries as well as globally under current policies toward prevention strategies such as smoking cessation campaigns aimed at reducing risk factors associated with cardiovascular events among adults over age 50 years old without prior history or symptoms associated either directly through lifestyle choices alone vs indirectly via chronic inflammation caused by gut microbiota dysbiosis leading up towards organ damage due primarily without doubt due primarily without doubt due primarily without doubt due primarily without doubt due primarily without doubt due primarily without doubt
Basic Science Discoveries with Human Application and Translation to Practice, Education, and Policy
The NINR is committed to funding research that will improve the health of Americans. Basic science discoveries are critical for this goal, as well as translating those discoveries into practice, education and policy.
The NINR supports research on many topics including:
-
Diagnosis and treatment of heart failure;
-
Alzheimer’s disease;
-
Lung cancer screening;
-
Stroke prevention through cholesterol testing in women at high risk for stroke;
NINR has identified 11 key research themes.
NINR has identified 11 key research themes. These themes are used to guide the funding and prioritization of NINR’s research, which is focused on improving health outcomes for populations served by nursing programs. Themes include:
-
Variation in practice among nurses at different levels of education, experience and specialty
-
Health promotion and disease prevention interventions for vulnerable populations (elderly adults, people with chronic diseases)
-
Personalized care delivery systems that support individuals’ preferences while optimizing outcomes across settings such as hospitals or home health agencies
Conclusion
We hope this article has helped you understand NINR’s theme categories and how they can be used to guide your own research. It is important to remember that there are many other important areas of nursing research that should not be overlooked. Some of these include the impact of nurse workforce policies on patient outcomes, the role of practice in enhancing health outcomes for both patients and caregivers, and disease prevention strategies for conditions such as obesity or cardiovascular disease. While these topics may not be as sexy as some others out there today, we believe they still warrant attention because they will ultimately affect everyone who works within nursing—and therefore should be researched with passion!
