Models of Transcultural Nursing
Introduction
Transcultural nursing is an important topic. It’s a field that deals with the intersection of diverse cultures and people who are living in a transnational context—a nurse who works internationally, for example. Transcultural nursing practitioners work with people from all over the world, including those coming to America for asylum or refugee status, or migrants moving between countries as part of their work. Transcultural nurses must be flexible and adaptable in their approach to patients’ needs because each patient has different cultural backgrounds and traditions.
Giger and Davidhizar’s Transcultural Assessment Model
Giger and Davidhizar’s Transcultural Assessment Model is a four-stage model. The four stages are:

Assessing the person (the first stage)

Examining the context (the second stage)

Examining culture and beliefs in order to determine how they will affect nursing practice (the third stage)

Creating an intervention plan based on cultural values, beliefs and needs that have been identified through this process (the fourth stage).
Leininger’s Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality
Leininger’s Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality is based on the premise that every person is a unique individual and every culture is unique. It describes four dimensions of culture: 1) Cultural beliefs and values, 2) Cultural practices, 3) Cultural patterns of communication (i.e., language) and 4) Social organization (i.e., gender).
Cultural Beliefs & Values
The first dimension concerns what people believe about themselves as well as others who are different from them; this includes their religious beliefs, national identity, cultural pride etcetera. For example: “I believe in God”; “my country makes me proud”; “this food tastes good” etcetera would all fall under this category as they represent core values which are often used to guide behavior through these three areas above mentioned

Transcultural nursing is a growing field. The field of transcultural nursing has grown over the past 20 years, with an emphasis on understanding how culture affects patients and their health care experiences, as well as theories about diversity and universality.
Transculturality is defined as “the capacity to think in multiple cultural frames at once” (Srivastava). It allows nurses to understand patients from different backgrounds by having more knowledge about their culture than most other healthcare providers would have. This can be useful for providing culturally competent care when working with individuals from other countries, or even within one’s own country if one lives in an area where there are many different ethnicities represented among its citizens (i.e., New York City).
Culturally competent nurses have the ability to work with and understand people from different backgrounds. They are able to create a safe environment for patients by being aware of their culture, language, and expectations of healthcare providers. Culturally competent nurses can also provide care that is tailored to each patient’s needs based on their culture instead of trying to fit them into one standard model of treatment.

In conclusion, transcultural nursing is an important topic. It is a field that can benefit from the use of models to help understand how cultural differences impact nursing practice. While each model has its own strengths and weaknesses, they all contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of transcultural care.
