Looking at Religion in America

Introduction

For most Americans, religion is a part of their lives. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that about 70% of Americans say they believe in God, and nearly half (49%) attend religious services at least once per month. But how do Americans who don’t identify with any particular faith shape their spirituality? What does it mean to be spiritual when you don’t believe in God? And what about those who do believe in God but aren’t affiliated with any particular religion? In this article we’ll explore some of the ways people think about religion and spirituality across different demographics, from millennials to seniors ages 65+.

Introduction

Religion is an important part of many lives, and it’s not just for the religious. The US is a deeply religious country, with over 90% of Americans identifying as Christians or some other faith group. This means that many people in America are involved with religion on a regular basis.

In fact, according to Gallup data from 2016 (the most recent available), more than half—51%—of Americans say they pray every day or almost every day; 30% report praying weekly; and only 13% say they never pray at all (Gallup).

Belief in God by religious affiliation

The most commonly held belief in God is that of Christians, and the second most commonly held belief is that of non-Christians. According to the Pew Research Center, 61% of Americans believe in God or a higher power; this number rises to 68% among Protestants and 66% among Catholics.

In addition to religious affiliation and attendance at worship services, there are other factors which contribute to your level of belief in God:

• Whether or not you were raised Catholic – if you were born into a Catholic family but no longer practice any religion (or if you were raised Protestant but now identify with another faith), it may be more difficult for your mind to accept an afterlife where there are no rewards and punishments for good or evil deeds done during one’s lifetime.

• How much time passes between when someone dies (i.e., before they’ve passed away) until their body is cremated or buried into earth; this helps determine whether they’ll spend eternity in heaven/hell according to their faith system alone without having any input from others like herself who have differing ideas about what constitutes salvation after dying due simply because they’re not members within her own faith community…

Higher education and belief in God

Religion and political affiliation

Praying, talking about religion and attending worship services

And while many people feel comfortable having strong beliefs about these things without having any formal training in theology or other related subjects like history, sociology or psychology (eek!), others feel compelled to study these things further if they want deeper insight into their own faith journey by learning more about what makes up belief systems throughout history before coming up with an answer based solely upon personal experience rather than relying solely upon facts found online rather than reading books written by professionals who specialize in those topics so they can properly inform how best practices should work together harmoniously instead

Religious traditions other than Christianity

While Christianity has the highest number of followers in America, there are many other religious traditions that have strong communities here. Some of these include Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam. In fact, no single religion accounts for more than 10% of Americans’ self-reported religious identity—meaning that most people don’t identify with any particular faith tradition.
