Our patients come to us after exploring various avenues of self-help. At times, these avenues involve the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies. Introduction
Transcultural nursing is a model of nursing that recognizes cultural differences in patient care. It describes a framework for patient care, which includes both cultural preservation and cultural maintenance, as well as accommodation or negotiation. The sunrise model of transcultural nursing was created by Adrienne Leininger (1936-2018) who was the first African American female to earn a PhD in nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was also the first African American woman to serve as an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School where she taught until her retirement in 1999. As with most models, this one has its critics but nonetheless remains an essential tool for understanding how transcultural care is best delivered by nurses working across cultures.

Cultural preservation
Cultural preservation is the process of maintaining the cultural identity of a group. It is important to preserve the culture because it is a part of who they are.
This can be done through language and customs, but also through traditions, rituals and religious practices that have been passed down through generations.
Cultural maintenance
Cultural maintenance is the first stage of transcultural nursing. It is a process of preserving the culture of the patient, maintaining his or her traditional values and beliefs. This phase serves to maintain the cultural identity of patients who are experiencing distress in their lives due to social changes brought about by globalization and mass media consumption.
The goal for cultural maintenance is not only to help patients preserve their own specific cultures, but also to promote better health outcomes for all people worldwide by promoting positive attitudes toward health care systems as well as making them aware of how they can benefit from receiving treatment at foreign hospitals or clinics (Zaffron et al., 2010).
Cultural care accommodation or negotiation
The nurse can negotiate with the patient and family to identify the cultural care accommodation or negotiation that best meets their needs. This approach allows for more flexibility in decision making, as well as an opportunity for the nurse to use their own cultural beliefs and practices to help them.
Cultural repatterning or re-adaptation
