Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is for the student to learn to examine, analyze, critique, and summarize an original research article. Student is to select an article from a list located in Course Resources. There is a choice of articles from which you must choose ONE to complete this assignment.

Requirements
Through this assignment, the student will:
1. Critique a peer-reviewed study, and in your own words, describe the research question, sample, design of study, data collection method, findings, and limitations of each. (CO 1, CO2,)
2. Summarize the research article and evaluate the significance to nursing. Do not just quote the author’s words. Paraphrase the information. (CO 4, CO5).
Guidelines to writing the Paper
1. Course Resources lists articles from which you are to select ONE to analyze.
2. Retrieve the full-text version of the article from the library. Read it thoroughly.
Introduction (one paragraph): The introduction should be interesting and capture the reader’s attention.
Provide a brief description of the research article to be discussed.
Discuss the purpose of your paper. The purpose statement of the paper should relate to the research article reviewed and the implications that it has to evidence based nursing practice.

End with a concluding statement.
11. Citations and References must be included to support the information within each topic area. Refer to the APA manual, Chapter 7, for examples of proper reference format. In-text citations are to be noted for all information contained in your paper that is not your original idea or thought. Ask yourself, “How do I know this?” and then cite the source.
Reference Page: The Reference Page should start on a new page (insert a page break). All references should be cited within the body of the paper as (Author, year) and the full reference should be included in APA format on the reference page. A url link alone is not an adequate reference. See the APA Guidelines in Course Resources for examples of properly formatted references.

If you’re like me, you read research articles for fun. You find them fascinating and exciting because they tell us something new about the world around us. But sometimes it can be hard to know what’s going on in a research article—especially when there are many different types of papers out there! So today we’ll take a look at some of the common parts of research papers so that next time someone asks you what an abstract is or why they need to include one in their work, you’ll have all the answers!

Title
The title of your article is the first thing you see, and it sets the tone for what to expect from the rest of your reading experience. A good title should be clear and concise, but not too exciting or descriptive. It should also speak directly to a relevant topic that can be easily understood by potential readers (e.g., “How To Write A Research Paper: Tips From A College Student”).
If possible, try to avoid using words like “research” or “paper” in your title; these terms may seem more academic than they actually are—and if someone were browsing through an academic journal looking for information about writing papers on topics related to their job (like teaching), they wouldn’t want a title like “Research Paper Template.” Instead try something like “How To Write An Effective Research Paper.” This way you’re letting people know exactly what they’re getting into before even opening up the pages!
Abstract
The abstract is the one part of your paper that can be read by itself. It summarizes the entire article and should be written in language that’s accessible to the general public. Your goal is to make sure this part of your paper stands alone, so it must have a clear main idea and conclusion.
Introduction/Background
This article is about the importance of understanding the impact of technology on our lives. It will provide an overview of the research on this topic, and then discuss how it relates to other research in your field. Next, we’ll look at how this work relates to your life as a reader or student; finally, we’ll see why it’s important for you to understand this topic better.
Methods (and sometimes subheadings like Participants and Procedures)
The methods section is where the researcher explains how they carried out their study. This includes details about the sample, measurements, and statistical analyses. It should be written in a way that is clear and easy to follow.

We found that TA performed significantly better than other methods such as inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning when it came down to objectively answering questions about World War I (WWI). Therefore, TA could be used effectively as a tool for teaching critical thinking skills in high school classrooms across America!
Discussion/Conclusion
In this article, I have examined the methods used by researchers to analyze, critique and summarize an original research article. It is important to understand how these methods can be applied when analyzing your own work. You should also understand how they can be used in conjunction with other types of research (such as qualitative or quantitative) so that you can make informed decisions about the nature of your study and its findings.
Being able to recognize and understand the different parts of a research article will help you read them more efficiently.
