Informatics and technologies in Nursing
Introduction
Informatics is a set of methods and software that allow people to store, retrieve, process and analyze information. Technological innovations have given rise to many different types of informatics which can be used across all sectors. In healthcare, there are a number of applications where technology could make a significant difference in patient care by enhancing or improving the quality of healthcare services. For example:
Informatics and technologies in Nursing
Informatics and technologies in nursing are essential for the advancement of healthcare. It is important to know how these technologies work, as well as their benefits and challenges. The use of informatics will help improve patient care through better communication between doctors and nurses, as well as faster diagnosis and treatment. These systems are also being used to reduce costs by reducing paperwork, which helps increase efficiency on both sides of the equation (patient & employee).
Informatics has been around since the early 1900s but only recently has become an integral part of our everyday lives; we use computers every day at home, work or school! It’s no surprise then that there are so many uses for this technology outside traditional healthcare settings too – such as entertainment devices like tablets/laptops etc., social media platforms like Facebook/Twitter etc., internet browsing software like Google Chrome browser etc..
Telemedicine
Telemedicine is the use of electronic information and telecommunication technologies to support long-distance clinical health care. Telemedicine can be used to provide access to specialists, diagnostic services, treatments and medications for patients who are unable to travel due to physical or mental limitations.
Telehealth is increasingly being used in practice settings as well as by those who want better access to care without having to leave their own homes or jobs (e.g., people with chronic diseases). For example, a mother with diabetes may receive advice from her doctor via telephone when she has questions about her child’s illness; an older adult suffering from dementia might receive help navigating through medication prescriptions; someone recovering from surgery may be able to communicate with others at home instead of being transferred into another facility every time they require medical attention; etcetera…
Electronic Health Records (EHR)
Electronic health records (EHR) are electronic systems that allow the storage and retrieval of health information. They can be used to share information between different healthcare providers, as well as store patient data, including demographics and medical history.
The EHR is a tool that allows nurses to access patient resources when they need them most. For example, if you have a question about medication side effects or allergies that might affect your treatment plan, an EHR will provide access to manuals containing all pertinent information at your fingertips so you don’t have to go looking through stacks of books while on duty!
Artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a computer science discipline that seeks to develop intelligence in machines. The field has a long history, with the first artificial intelligence program, simple logic based on rule following, being developed in 1950 by John McCarthy at Dartmouth College.
Informatics and technologies in nursing include many different forms of AI. These include:
-
Machine learning algorithms; these learn from examples and can then be used to predict outcomes for future patients or patients’ conditions based on those examples
-
Knowledge representation techniques; these encode information so that computers can understand it more effectively than humans do (e..g., using 3D models instead of 2D pictures). This allows computers to perform tasks they would otherwise be unable to perform because they require too much training time before going live with them
Machine learning
Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence. It’s the ability to make predictions based on data, and it’s used in many different fields. In healthcare, machine learning can be used to predict outcomes or detect patterns that can improve systems.
Machine learning algorithms can be applied to any kind of problem where you want your computer system to learn from its past experiences or new information collected by sensors. For example:
-
Machine learning could help doctors identify patients at risk for certain diseases such as cancer so they can be monitored more closely than others (for example).
-
It could also be used by nurses who work with elderly people because there are often subtle signs that aren’t visible from looking at someone physically but give them away when taken into account as part of a larger picture of how well someone is doing overall healthwise (such as their blood pressure).
Virtual Reality (VR)
Virtual reality (VR) is a computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way through special electronic equipment, such as a headset. It uses various senses to allow users to interact with the digital environment, and is used in many industries, including healthcare, education and entertainment.
VR has been applied for many years in healthcare settings as it allows nurses to observe patients from different angles on video screens or through images projected onto walls — allowing them access not only what’s happening at any given moment but also how things look from another perspective. In addition to these practical applications, VR technology has been utilized by researchers interested in studying complex interactions between people who live together under stressful conditions like war zones (e.g., Iraq) or disaster areas (e.g., Fukushima).
Robotics and Automation in Nursing
Robots are being used in nursing. They can help nurses with tasks that are repetitive, dangerous or boring. Robots can also help with tasks that require a high level of precision. In addition to providing assistance to patients, robots may also be used to enhance the care provided by nurses and other health care professionals at hospitals and other health care facilities around the world.
Takeaway:
The future of nursing is bright. The profession is already beginning to embrace technology and data-driven decision-making, but there’s still work to be done.
The future of nursing will be more connected, more automated, and more technology-driven as we move forward into the 21st century. As healthcare becomes increasingly personalized and patient-centric, it’s important that nurses stay up-to-date with new technologies in order to provide competent care for their patients—and ourselves!
