Introduction
If you’re an educator, it’s likely that you’ve had to implement practice changes for your students. And if you’re like me, then there’s a good chance that these have turned out to be more difficult than you thought they would be. As a teacher and coach, it is my goal to provide the best possible learning environment for my students while also making sure they are ready for their future careers in the workforce. However, this can be challenging at times due to limited resources and limited time available due to school calendar constraints among other factors—especially during the first few years after entering college or graduate school. So how do we make sure our efforts are grounded in research and theory? In this post I’ll discuss some ways we can incorporate theory when implementing practice changes:
Choose the theory or theories that most closely align with the issue.
Theory is not just a way of thinking and understanding; it’s also a way of explaining. Theories help explain why one thing happens over another, how things work together or apart, how people think and feel about their lives.
When you choose the theory that most closely aligns with your issue you may be surprised at how many other theories fit in with it as well. In fact, once you begin looking at all possible ways of thinking about this problem there are likely to be many others that seem like they should apply but don’t quite fit because they don’t address some aspect of your situation (or even contradict each other).
Identify key concepts within the theory or theories.

Set goals before you start implementing changes.

Don’t worry about what other people’s goals are, but be ambitious and realistic with your own. Examples: “I want to lose 20 pounds by summer” or “I will run a half marathon in two years.”
Identify key concepts that are not addressed by the theory or theories.
You may have the opportunity to use a new theory or theories as a starting point for further research, or to create your own theory. For example, if the practice change is supposed to reduce anxiety in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), you might choose to look into whether or not there are any links between ASD and anxiety. Or maybe you want to develop interventions that address this issue.
When using theories as a starting point for further research, it’s important not just because they could offer an understanding of what’s happening but also because they could help inform how we approach our work as practitioners in this field—and maybe even guide us toward solutions!
Determine how to operationalize theory-driven ideas and interventions at the practice level.
Here are some ways to operationalize theory:

Identify the theory and its applicability at the practice level. For example, if you’re implementing an intervention called “Intervention 1,” which is based on a theoretical construct known as “Theory A,” then it is important to know what that means in practice—how much time should you give each behavior? What strategies do they use? And so on.

Develop a plan for how you will conduct research and implement change in your organization. This includes identifying who needs to be involved (e.g., management or staff), setting goals for yourself within your organization and its environment; building relationships with key stakeholders/partners; determining budget requirements; creating timelines for implementation; developing materials such as educational modules/dossiers for distribution throughout your organization

The key to effective implementation of practice changes is grounded in research and theory. Theory helps to guide the implementation of practice changes, which can then be evaluated for effectiveness. Theory also provides a foundation for developing new practices that may not have been considered possible before.
