How can leaders encourage workflow innovation?
Introduction
Innovation is a buzzword in the workplace. But who really knows what it means? To me, innovation means finding new ways to do old things. It’s also about breaking rules and making changes that make your company better than ever before. The problem is that many leaders don’t know how to encourage employees to come up with these ideas—or worse yet, they think they’re too busy or not creative enough themselves! So if you’re looking for ways to encourage workflow innovation in your team members (and if you aren’t already doing this), read on!
Routine blocks innovation, so leaders should create an environment where employees are excited about their work.
Leaders should create an environment where employees are excited about their work. The idea of routine is a good one: it’s just that it can hinder creativity and innovation when used as the focus for everything in your organization. A good example of this is the way we schedule meetings with each other, which often runs on a set schedule every week or month. This means that we’re all going to see each other at certain times on certain days, which makes us feel like we have no choice but to show up at those times (and even worse, feel obligated). This leads people who might have otherwise wanted something different out of life into feeling stuck in their current job roles—and even worse than that: bored!
Leaders should keep up on new technology and legal changes and share what they learn.
As leaders, you should stay up to date on new technology and legal changes. You can do this by:
-
Keeping up with all of the latest trends in your industry.
-
Reading about the latest legal changes that may affect your company’s workflow, including any new regulations or policies that affect how people are paid within your organization.
Teamwork is crucial to creativity, so leadership should create a culture that encourages collaboration.

-
Teamwork makes it easier for people to accomplish more. A team’s members have more resources than just themselves and can leverage each other’s ideas and expertise in order to achieve their goals. This saves time, money and effort—which means you’ll be able to do more things at once!
-
Teamwork is more fun than working alone because everyone gets involved in the process together instead of competing against one another or feeling isolated from the group (this is especially true if you’re part of an organization rather than an individual). Having fun while working will motivate your team members even further as well because they’ll be excited about their accomplishments! In addition: It helps build camaraderie between co-workers who may not otherwise interact much outside work hours; it promotes healthy competition among colleagues which promotes healthy competition among colleagues; there’s less stress associated with deadlines since teams don’t have individual responsibilities like being responsible for completing tasks without fail (ease up on yourself!), etcetera…
Praise creativity because it inspires more of it.
-
Encourage creativity by praising it.
-
When you see someone do something creative, mention it! You might think this sounds silly, but I’ve found that when someone takes the time to think outside of their own box and come up with an innovative solution, they get praise from others who appreciate their ingenuity.
-
Don’t be afraid to praise creativity in front of others—even if you’re not sure how much credit you should give them for their idea or solution. You’ll help foster an environment where people feel comfortable sharing ideas and solutions with each other because everyone knows there will be plenty of opportunities for both praise AND criticism (which is healthy!).
Encourage brainstorming sessions and offer mini-challenges to employees to keep them engaged and creative.

Brainstorming sessions can be used to develop new ideas, but they also have the added benefit of helping individuals identify the skills they need in order to solve problems. During this process, managers can ask employees: “What is your job? What are you good at?” This helps managers understand what skills their team needs so they can match those up with opportunities for growth or training within their organizations. Mini-challenges are short, specific challenges that can be completed in a day or two; for example: How many steps are there in a building’s stairwell? How much food does one person eat per day on average?
Workplace leaders have many ways to foster creativity in their team members.
Workplace leaders have many ways to foster creativity in their team members. They can:
-
Create an environment where employees are excited about their work. This will make them more likely to try new things and make an effort, which is good for the business as well as your team’s morale.
-
Keep up on technology and legal changes so that you know what’s coming down the pipe (and when). If you’re not sure how this will affect your business or job function, ask someone who knows! That way you can plan ahead for any potential issues that may arise from these changes.
-
Collaborate with other departments within the company so everyone feels like they’re part of something bigger than themselves—this fosters teamwork among all employees instead of just one department/team/leader’s ideas being pushed forward without consideration from others who might have different perspectives or ideas on how best use resources available at hand.”
