Health care accrediting bodies in the United States
Topic 5 DQ 1
The health care industry is influenced by multiple accrediting bodies that are stakeholders in the operation of health care organizations. Periodically, the missions and roles of these accrediting bodies may be in conflict with one another. How should health care administrators navigate among the conflicting missions and roles of accreditors in order to assure that the health care organization remains accredited and has an increased opportunity for sustainability? Support your view with relevant research. Include documentation of the mission, role, and responsibilities of a specific accrediting agency (e.g., Joint Commission, Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services [CMS]; the Center in Improvement in Healthcare Quality [CIHQ], etc.) as needed.

Health care accrediting bodies in the United States
Introduction
Health care accreditation is a process through which an institution or organization is recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as qualified to provide health care services at the appropriate level to meet defined standards. Accrediting agencies apply standards that have been determined by a standard-setting body using criteria set forth in regulations and policies published by HHS; they evaluate each institution’s performance against these criteria, including quality measures and outcomes, safety measures, patient experience/outcome measures and community benefit activities as well as other criteria specified under federal law.
CARF
The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Health Professions (CARF) is an accrediting body for health care organizations. CARF was founded in 1982 and has headquarters in Washington, D.C., with an office in San Francisco and additional offices around the world.
In addition to its role as a healthcare accrediting body, CARF is also involved with providing services such as quality improvement support, education and training opportunities, credentialing services and more!
COA
The Council on Accreditation (COA) is a non-profit organization that accredits health care organizations in the United States. COA has more than 2,000 members, including physicians and other health professionals who are committed to patient safety and quality improvement.
COA’s goal is to ensure that all health care facilities have procedures in place so their patients receive the highest quality of care possible. These standards are based on guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which recognizes COA as an independent agency that provides objective verification of quality assurance programs within its scope of recognition—including hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies and hospices—as well as laboratories accredited under ISO 17025 standards or equivalent national accreditation programs recognized by HHS/HCA&D
JCAHO
JCAHO is a private, non-profit organization that has been providing quality assurance to health care organizations since 1942. JCAHO accredits more than 18,000 hospitals and other types of health care facilities. In addition to being the only accrediting body for hospitals in the United States, it also provides accreditation for other types of facilities such as home health agencies and skilled nursing facilities (SNFs).
JCAHO was established by the American Hospital Association (AHA) in 1942 as “The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals” (JCAH). It became an independent organization in 1952 with its current name “Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations” (JCAHO).
NCQA
NCQA is a private, nonprofit organization that accredits and certifies health plans. NCQA is a member of the National Quality Forum (NQF). The NQF was founded in 1999 to improve health care quality through joint efforts among organizations with expertise in quality improvement and management, including NCQA.
The mission of NCQA is “to provide trusted information about health care quality across the continuum.” The organization does this by determining whether health plans meet certain standards for quality improvement, such as having high performance measures or using transparent reporting systems. It also provides guidance on how to measure performance against these standards so that consumers can make informed decisions about their coverage options based on available data instead of guesswork—or worse yet—bogus claims being made by insurance companies themselves!
PEER
PEER is the accrediting body for long-term care facilities. The organization was founded in 2005, and it’s based in Washington, DC. It’s a non-profit organization that’s a member of the National Quality Forum (NQF).
