Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?
March 21, 2010, was not EBP’s date of birth, but it may be the date the approach “grew up” and left home to take on the world.
When the Affordable Care Act was passed, it came with a requirement of empirical evidence. Research on EBP increased significantly. Application of EBP spread to allied health professions, education, healthcare technology, and more. Health organizations began to adopt and promote EBP.
In this Discussion, you will consider this adoption. You will examine healthcare organization websites and analyze to what extent these organizations use EBP.
To Prepare:
- Review the Resources and reflect on the definition and goal of EBP.
- Choose a professional healthcare organization’s website (e.g., a reimbursing body, an accredited body, or a national initiative).
- Explore the website to determine where and to what extent EBP is evident.
By Day 3 of Week 1
Post a description of the healthcare organization website you reviewed. Describe where, if at all, EBP appears (e.g., the mission, vision, philosophy, and/or goals of the healthcare organization, or in other locations on the website). Then, explain whether this healthcare organization’s work is grounded in EBP and why or why not. Finally, explain whether the information you discovered on the healthcare organization’s website has changed your perception of the healthcare organization. Be specific and provide examples.
By Day 6 of Week 1
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days by visiting the websites they shared and offering additional examples of EBP or alternative views/interpretations to those shared in your colleagues’ posts.

The Evolution of EBP
EBP is a relatively new approach to medical practice. It was first developed in the late 1990s, but its roots are much older than that. The IOM Committee on Quality of Health Care in America recommended that nursing researchers collaborate with other disciplines to develop evidence-based practice (EBP). The purpose of this collaboration is to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs by standardizing best practices across health care settings and systems.

The evolution of EBP has taken place over the past several decades. At first, it was a way to improve the quality of health care by focusing on evidence-based practice (EBP). However, as time has passed and new methods have developed, so too have the goals and objectives that define EBP. The current definition includes four main components:

The evidence-based practice (EBP) approach is a systematic approach to using research evidence to make decisions about clinical care. It requires collaboration between researchers, practitioners, and organizations. The EBP process involves three phases: (1) identifying the problem or need in question; (2) gathering information about what’s already known about how best to address that issue; and finally (3), applying this knowledge so as not only improve upon current practices but also avoid future problems altogether!

For example: A nurse decides that using fewer antibiotics during a patient’s hospital stay is better than giving them when they first arrive at the hospital; however if this decision is based purely on their own experience then there is no evidence base behind it so it cannot be considered as “evidence-based” practice!

Nurses are also highly skilled at identifying gaps in knowledge, determining what data is required and how it should be collected, analyzing findings for validity, reliability and applicability (VLA), communicating findings effectively with patients/caregivers so that they understand how changes will affect them and collaborating across disciplines within healthcare settings.
