Conflict is a part of life, and it’s important to embrace the good that can come from it. But conflict can also be destructive if you let it run amok. So how do you make sure that your group doesn’t turn toxic? Let me tell you!
Conflict isn’t always a bad thing.
Conflict can be a good thing. It can help a group reach better results, find new ways of working and improve communication.
Conflict is when you disagree with someone or something in your team. But it doesn’t have to stop there; conflict can also help your team make progress towards their goals faster and more efficiently than they would alone.

As you may have learned in chapter 6, when people disagree on what the group’s goals are, it often leads to task conflict. Task conflict is when there’s disagreement over how to achieve those goals and how much time or effort should be spent doing so. In order for your group to move forward with its work product, it needs everyone to agree on those key elements of any project—what specific tasks need to be completed, what resources are available and how best they should be used (including budget), etc., etc., ad infinitum until each member feels comfortable moving forward with their own ideas based on their expertise within that field. Without task conflict being resolved early on by clarifying these things upfront rather than later after having already invested too much time into something that didn’t work out well due solely because no one communicated clearly enough about what was going wrong prior!
Process conflict can help a group find new ways of working.
Process conflict is a type of conflict that occurs when people disagree on how to do something. For example, if you’re trying to decide what time the meeting should start and your coworkers disagree, that’s process conflict.
Process conflict can be good if it helps a group find better ways of working or solving problems together. For example, maybe some people in the group don’t like having meetings because they feel like they’re wasting time by sitting around waiting for someone else’s input before making their own decision about what direction to take with an issue. Relationship conflict will distract a group from its goals and sometimes make people less able to work together.
Relationship conflict occurs when two or more people have different ideas about what the group should do, how it should do it and who should be involved. This can happen for many reasons:

Some people are more focused on the goals of the group than others; this could mean that some members would rather spend their time on activities unrelated to the project at hand (such as socializing). If these personalities aren’t working well together, they might end up with relationship conflicts that derail progress toward achieving their shared goal.

People may have different views about what’s important in life—and those views may cause them to disagree over how best to achieve certain objectives within a group setting (for example: “I’m going out with friends tonight,” versus “I need my rest”). When these differences aren’t resolved early enough into any given project cycle, they can become problematic later down the road when deadlines arrive and other members start demanding answers from you personally – which means you’ll probably feel pressured into making decisions based solely on what’s best for yourself instead!
