Theory and Variables (graded)
Review the differences in predictive and prescriptive studies and select a predictive or prescriptive article that you found in your literature search. What are the independent variables (IV), dependent variables (DV), and mediating variables (MVs) that you find in the article? How do determining IVs, DVs, and MVs help you discern the theory tested in the research? In your particular article, what risk factors are identified, or what recommendations are provided?

Differences in predictive and prescriptive studies
Introduction
In this article, we’ll explore the different types of scientific studies—descriptive, predictive and prescriptive. We’ll also discuss how each type of study differs from the others and how they’re used in science.
Descriptive studies describe what something is like.
-
Descriptive studies describe what something is like.
-
They’re used to collect data and make inferences about the characteristics of a population, but can’t explain why things happen.
-
An example would be asking people if they’ve ever been married or divorced.
Predictive studies investigate what might happen based on certain conditions.
Predictive studies are used to predict future trends. They can be used for a variety of purposes, including:
-
To determine the outcome of a business plan or experiment.
-
To try and predict how something will perform in the future.
Prescriptive studies investigate what will happen when certain conditions are met.
Prescriptive studies are used to predict the future. These types of scientific research look at a specific condition, like a treatment or medication, and then try to make recommendations based on what they have learned from their previous studies.
Prescriptives can also be used to predict things that haven’t happened yet but could happen in the future—like predicting which cancer drugs will save lives and which ones won’t!
There are three main types of scientific studies
There are three main types of scientific studies: descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive.
-
Descriptive studies are ones that describe what is happening in a particular situation or phenomenon. They can be used to understand more about how things work or why certain things happen. For example, if you want to know what’s going on at your workplace when it comes to sales figures and productivity levels (or anything else), you might conduct a descriptive study by asking employees questions about their experience with the company’s products and services over time.
-
Predictive studies look for patterns in data sets—such as sales figures in your company—and try to figure out which factors could influence those results (for example: Are higher salaries related? Do certain management styles lead directly toward improved performance?). This type of research is useful because it can help businesses make informed decisions around areas such as recruiting practices or employee benefits packages; however, since there isn’t always enough information available when conducting these types of studies (and sometimes even after conducting them!), they’re often considered less reliable than other types mentioned above due largely due lack robustness findings demonstrated through repeated experimentation prior formulation conclusions drawn conclusions drawn
Conclusion
This is a great way to learn about the difference between predictive and prescriptive studies. As you can see, there are two main differences between them: descriptive studies describe how something works, while predictive studies investigate how it might work in the future. Prescriptive studies investigate what will happen when certain conditions are met.
