Social competence is a complex concept consisting of social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral skills. For example, one might change social interactions based on the situational perspective of another individual. Cultural competency enables organizations to work in cross-cultural situations based on skills, attitudes, behaviors, and policies. For example, it is important to provide health care services that meet the needs of all patients and addresses diversity issues.
In 500-750 words, address why social and cultural competency is critical in the research process. Be sure to address the following prompts:
- Define social and cultural competency
- Evaluate the importance of these concepts in terms of social psychological research.
- Give an example of a social psychological concept that can be understood from a cross-cultural perspective (e.g., social self, emotion, attitudes, fundamental attribution error)
- Why does cultural competency matter when researching a concept like the one you chose?
- Discuss problems that might occur if cross-cultural perspectives are neglected in the research. Be sure to share an example(s). Use two to three scholarly resources to support your explanations.

This is a Collaborative Learning Community (CLC) assignment. You will be assigned group in class. We have navigated through much research to date. As you know, ethical considerations are vital during this process. After reading about Milgram’s compliance experiment and many of the early studies in social psychology, it becomes clear that participants in social psychology have suffered harm. There are safeguards in place today within the American Psychological Association’s Code of Ethics (2016) with regard to research. Institutional Review Boards have also been put in place to protect both human and animal research participants.Imagine your CLC group sits on an Institutional Review Board (IRB) and someone like Phillip Zombardo or Stanley Milgram provides you with a research proposal to conduct the same experiment(s).Task: Do some research and chose an unethical study that has been conducted thus far (i.e., Monster Study, Aversion Project, Dr. Money/David Reimer, Learned Helplessness).A quick internet search will reveal other ideas.Your job is to approve the study, approve with modifications, or reject the study completely. Using the APA Code of Ethics, justify your group’s determination. The code of ethics can be found at http://www.apa.org/ethics/code/index.aspxCreate a PowerPoint presentation, of 8-12 slides (slide count does not include the title and reference slide), in which your group presents their decision. Your PowerPoint should include:
- Provide a summary of the experiment.
- Identify some general ethical concerns with the experiment.
- Using the APA Code of Ethics, identify at least five specific ethic codes that were violated with this study. Be sure to explain why there was a code violation.
- Provide your decision as an IRB if you will approve the study, approve it with modifications, or flat out reject it all together.
Use two to three scholarly resources for support. Your textbook is a viable source. Resources should be listed on the last slide.
Include speaker notes below each content-related slide that represent what would be said if giving the presentation in person. Expand upon the information included in the slide and do not simply restate it. Please ensure the speaker notes include 50-75 words per slide.

Social and cultural competency
Introduction
In this article I will explain how social and cultural competency can help students succeed in college. What is social justice? How would you define it? What do you think is the reason for different racial and ethnic groups having varying levels of success in college completion? What does it mean to be part of a community?
How would you define social justice?
Social justice is the idea that all people should have equal access to resources, opportunities and institutions. It’s also about treating everyone fairly.
What does this mean? If you are a poor person living in a poor country, your government should provide you with adequate housing so you don’t have to live in shacks or tents. If your family has no money for food, they should be able to get free food from social services like soup kitchens or shelters that offer meals on wheels (which many cities do). And if your children can’t afford school supplies like pencils or paper because their parents don’t make enough money at work—they’ll get those things through public schools!
What do you think is the reason for different racial and ethnic groups having varying levels of success in college completion?
There are a number of reasons why individuals from different racial and ethnic groups may have varying levels of success in college completion. The first is the level of family income and education, which can influence whether or not students will be able to take advantage of the resources available on campus. Additionally, cultural values and beliefs about education also play a role in how well someone does in school; for example, some parents may believe that it is better for their children to attend college instead of getting an education off-campus since they feel that school equates with “a path” or “a way” instead of simply being an educational process itself (Cazden & colleagues).
Social support networks also affect how well people do academically; people who feel connected with others tend to be more optimistic about their abilities than those who don’t feel as supported by others (Langone & colleagues). Social networks outside formal institutions such as churches also provide support when needed most during stressful times at school (Gurung et al.). Finally institutional support systems like counseling centers which provide assistance for students who need help dealing with personal issues off campus have been shown time after time again by research studies conducted over many years now .
What does it mean to you to be part of a community?
What does it mean to you to be part of a community?
-
A place where you feel safe and accepted.
-
A place where you can belong.
-
A place where people know your name and greet you with a smile, even if they don’t really know what’s going on in your life or why they should care about any of it.
-
A place where fun happens without all the worry and stress that comes along with being an adult—and also without having to worry about whether or not anyone else will have fun with them if they do try something new!
Explain how race and ethnicity are socially constructed.
Race and ethnicity are socially constructed. The concept of race is a social construct, which means that it’s not true or inherent in our DNA (as some people might assume). Ethnicity is also a social construct—it refers to how we identify ourselves and others around us.
While both terms have been used interchangeably for many years, there are important differences between them: race refers to an inherited physical characteristic such as skin color or hair texture; ethnicity refers more specifically than race does to ancestry, culture and language within any given group of people who share those characteristics in common (i.e., it could include someone with light skin who speaks Spanish).
Takeaway:
Social justice is about equality. People of color are disadvantaged in society, and there are many factors that contribute to this. Race and ethnicity are socially constructed categories that have been used to define groups of people with certain traits like skin color, culture or language. These social constructs can create barriers for members of minority groups who experience discrimination because they don’t fit into the norm.
People should be aware of their privilege if they want to help make a difference in the world around them!
Conclusion
We’ve seen that there are many ways to define social justice, and many different kinds of people who are interested in it. There is no single definition of social justice, but there is a commitment to having fair and equitable treatment regardless of race or ethnicity; caring for those who need help but can’t get it due to systematic societal barriers; sharing power equitably with others who have less power than you do; and promoting the common good over self-interest. This wide variety of values makes sense when you consider the diversity of our world today—and why we should care about ensuring equality among groups that often experience discrimination or inequality in society at large.
