Current trends in health care regulation reform in the United States
Introduction
In the past decade, the United States has experienced significant changes in health care regulation. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law in 2010; however, it did not fully take effect until 2014. This legislation is the most recent attempt at reforming the system of health care funding and delivery in America. While many states have taken action on their own to improve public health insurance programs through state legislation, federal efforts have also been made to change some aspects of this system as well. This article will discuss these trends by using selected case studies from North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Pennsylvania as examples of how states are responding to these challenges. Further research will also be discussed regarding potential future policy options arising from these discussions
Introduction
Health care reform is a complex issue that has been the top priority for the United States since its inception. The Affordable Care Act (ACA), which was passed in 2010, sought to address several issues with regards to access, affordability and quality of care by implementing various reforms such as:
-
Medicaid expansion
-
Individual mandate requiring all citizens above age 18 have health insurance coverage
-
Insurance exchanges where individuals could purchase affordable health coverage plans through qualified carriers
State Legislation
State legislation can be a good way to test the waters for federal legislation. It’s also an important way for states and their citizens to help shape national health care policy.
In addition, state legislatures are often in a better position than Congress or the executive branch to understand local needs and priorities, which may be different from those at play in Washington, DC. For example, some states have been resistant to expanding Medicaid coverage under Obamacare because of concerns about costs; this could mean that they would be willing to accept other parts of the law but not expand Medicaid eligibility entirely (or at least not until after 2020). If you want your state legislature to support some element of health reform—such as private insurance exchanges—you should make sure they know what else needs doing before moving forward with this part of your plan!
Federal Legislation
-
The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also called “Obamacare,” was an ambitious health care reform law signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2010. It was designed to make health insurance more affordable, provide coverage for more Americans, improve quality of care and reduce costs. ACA has been upheld by the Supreme Court but has been weakened by Congress as a result of repeal efforts.
-
The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) passed with bipartisan support in December 2015 and will increase payments for physicians who treat Medicare beneficiaries through fee-for-service programs or value-based payment models
-
MACRA establishes new rules for evaluating clinical practice guidelines such as those used by hospitals and doctors’ offices that want federal reimbursement under fee-for service arrangements
Conclusion
-
The government and the health care industry are working together to find solutions.
-
Reform is a work in progress, and there is still more to do.
-
The government and the health care industry are working with other countries to find solutions.
Takeaway:
The takeaway is that health care regulation reform is important. It’s a multilayered process, and it will continue to be one for years to come.
Conclusion
We believe that the future of health care regulation is bound up with the fate of these proposals. If they are enacted into law, they will have a major impact on the American healthcare system. However, if they are not enacted or are repealed in their entirety, future reforms may be significantly altered.
