Rupert Murdoch, media mogul
Rupert Murdoch is the founder of News Corporation and a well-known conservative. He owns Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, HarperCollins Publishers and other media companies. Murdoch was born in Melbourne, Australia on March 11th 1931. His father James Murdoch was a telegraph operator who became interested in publishing and changed his name from James Edward to Rupert Joseph Maurice Harman.
Murdoch received his first taste of journalism at age 15 when he started working as an assistant at The Perth Sun newspaper owned by his father’s company Amalgamated Press (later called News Limited). He later worked as an editor at The Daily Telegraph newspaper before starting up his own company with two colleagues called Australian Consolidated Press Limited (ACP), which later merged with Fairfax Media Group Incorporated
John Chambers, CEO of Cisco
John Chambers is the CEO of Cisco Systems, a technology company that makes networking equipment.
Chambers was born in San Francisco and grew up in Canada. He received his MBA from Stanford University, where he also served as an engineering student representative on behalf of the student body. After spending time working at McKinsey & Company, Chambers went on to become an executive vice president at Cisco before becoming its president and CEO in 2002; under his leadership, the company has grown into one of the largest manufacturers and service providers worldwide for networking products like routers and switches (and even Wi-Fi access points!).
Herbert A. Allen III, investment banker
Herbert A. Allen III is a former investment banker and the chairman of Allen & Company. He is also the founder of Allen & Company, an investment firm with offices in New York, London, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
Allen has been named one of the top 100 CEOs by Fortune Magazine for six consecutive years (1998-2002).
David M. Rubenstein, founder of Carlyle Group
David M. Rubenstein is a co-founder of Carlyle Group, an international private equity firm that invests in companies around the world. He also founded The Carlyle Group Foundation, which supports charitable organizations and education reform efforts across the United States and around the world.
Rubenstein graduated from Harvard Business School in 1971 with an MBA degree in management, having majored in finance and accounting while at Harvard College (his father was chairman of Carnegie Corporation). After graduation he worked briefly as a management consultant before returning to Washington D.C., where he became involved with government affairs as well as public policy issues surrounding energy policy and nuclear proliferation during Jimmy Carter’s administration (1977-1981).
Peter G. Peterson, chairman of Blackstone Group
Peter G. Peterson, chairman of Blackstone Group, is a former U.S. Secretary of Commerce and one of the most influential business leaders in America today. He has served as a director at Blackstone since 1985, when he became its vice president for corporate strategy and public affairs. In 1995, he became co-chairman alongside Stephen Schwarzman; they remain involved with the firm’s management team today (Peterson was named chairman in 2011).
Peterson also founded The Concord Coalition in 1997—a nonpartisan organization that works to reduce federal deficits by reducing spending on entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security—and serves as its chairman emeritus today after stepping down from that position several years ago due to health reasons related to his age (he turned 78 last year). He also founded two other entities: The Peter G. Peterson Foundation; which focuses on creating economic growth through education reform efforts such as charter schools; as well as Global Financial Integrity (GFI), which aims at curbing illicit financial flows outbound from developing countries into richer ones such as China or Russia where these funds can be used for purposes other than improving lives locally within said country’s borders
John Mack, former CEO of Morgan Stanley
John Mack is an American business leader, who served as the chairman and CEO of Morgan Stanley from January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2007. As executive vice president at the firm in 1980 and then as chief operating officer (COO) from 1983 to 1990, he helped turn around a struggling investment bank into one of Wall Street’s most powerful firms.
Mack holds degrees from Fordham University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history; Boston College Law School where he received his J.D.; Columbia Business School where he earned an MBA; and Stanford University where he earned an MBA with distinction in both economics and finance.
In 1976 Mack joined Morgan Stanley as an investment banker after graduating from Fordham University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and receiving his law degree from Boston College Law School three years later.[1] He spent 30 years there before leaving to serve as President Barack Obama’s director for community organization initiatives during his tenure as governor (2007–10).[2]
William H. Gates III, co-founder of Microsoft and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Bill Gates is the co-founder of Microsoft and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, along with his wife Melinda. The couple has pledged $1 billion each to improve global health, education, energy and agriculture.
He graduated from Harvard University with a degree in English literature and was awarded a scholarship that allowed him to study abroad in London during summers. He then earned a master’s degree at Harvard Business School before joining Microsoft Corp., where he worked on developing software for its computer systems division (MS DOS).
