This assignment gives you an opportunity to use some of the information you’ve been learning in this course to improve the world around you. In this assignment, you will engage in some kind of body activism, write a brief paper, and share your final product with the class in an informal presentation.
Act of Body Activism
Dr. Michael Levine advocates for a “Bolder Model” of eating disorders prevention and body activism. He encourages those who want to make a difference to actively challenge the status quo regarding cultural messages about appearance. According to Dr. Levine, the most successful prevention and activism efforts include at least some of the 5 C’s:
• Consciousness-raising in regard to personal, social, and cultural influences on body image and eating;
• Connection-building, or fostering relationships between people;
• Competence-building by developing life skills such as stress management and assertive communication; and
• Change via Choice, such that people are encouraged to put their knowledge, connections, and competencies to work in changing unhealthy personal, social, and cultural practices.
You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

The world of beauty and fashion is a complex place. It’s full of body activism and self-care, but it can also be very judgemental. In this article, we’ll explore why it’s important to challenge the paradigm that says there are only two ways to look: skinny or fat. We’ll discuss how posing nude can be a form of self-care for women who feel pressured by society into being ashamed about their bodies or what they wear (or don’t wear). And finally, we’ll talk about how body positivity isn’t just about looking good; it’s about changing social narratives so people feel comfortable in their own skin!

The media is a powerful tool that influences how we see ourselves, and in turn can be used to change the way we see others. It’s important to note that this does not mean that everyone should have the same ideal body type or look as others do; rather, it means you shouldn’t let your own fears about what others think about you prevent you from living your life authentically and happily!
The fashion industry tells us how we should look
The fashion industry is not a charity, government agency, social movement or religion. It’s a business and businesses make money if they sell products. The only way to do this is by telling people what they should look like and how they should act in order to fit into society’s norms.
The fashion industry has been doing this since the beginning of time (or at least since we started wearing clothes). Today it continues to shape our identities through media representation of beauty ideals in magazines and TV shows (think: fashion shows), advertisements that promote unhealthy food consumption patterns based on thinness as a signifier of healthiness/sociability (think “you’re not fat enough”), movies with women who look like Barbie dolls but act like humans; etcetera…
It’s a form of self-care to show up in the world as your authentic self
Body positivity is a form of self-care. It’s about embracing your body and being proud of it, no matter what shape or size. If you don’t like the way your body looks, then there’s no point in trying to lose weight or get fit because that will only make you feel worse about yourself.
You might think that body positivity means showing off your curves in order to prove how fashionable and sexy someone can be if they have curves but this isn’t true at all: Being comfortable with who you are is more important than being fashionable! Body positivity should be about accepting yourself as an individual; whether that means loving every part of yourself (even if some parts aren’t perfect) or just learning how not judge others’ bodies based on their appearance or weight gain/loss over time…it doesn’t matter as long as everyone involved feels good inside & out!

Body positivity is about changing the social narrative. It’s about promoting a more positive view of bodies, no matter what size or shape you are. It’s about seeing beauty in our bodies despite any imperfections and making sure that we are understanding that we can love ourselves no matter what size or shape we may be.
The narrative around body positivity is that it’s all about loving your body and accepting yourself without judgment or shame. But this isn’t always true; there are many people who have experienced bullying due to their weight, so it’s important for them too see themselves as beautiful because they deserve love! When you start seeing yourself as beautiful inside and out instead of just focusing on one aspect (like your thighs), then everything else starts falling into place (like being confident).
Body positivity isn’t just about loving yourself – it means taking care of yourself physically as well as mentally so no matter what situation arises during life: whether at school/work…or even when interacting with others such as family members from time-to time.”
Posing nude can be a way to embrace your body and embrace feminism
Nude photography is a way to show the world that you are proud of your body and that it’s not something to be ashamed of. You can embrace your body by doing things that make you feel good, like going for a walk or getting into a hot tub with friends. You can also embrace your body by being yourself being proud of who you are and what makes up who you are as an individual.
One way in which I have embraced my own femininity is through nude photography; this has helped me feel more comfortable in my own skin, rather than feeling pressure from society telling me how I should look or act based on what other people think about how beautiful/ugly/etc., beauty standards are supposed to be (which themselves come from patriarchy).

You may have heard that some people believe that they should be proud or proud of their bodies because they’re different from others. They may think that there are no other options for them if they don’t fit into society’s standards of what a “proper” human being looks like—that if you don’t have an hourglass figure or full lips then you’re not really “normal.” This is why I created Act Of Body Activism: I wanted to show people that there are plenty of ways for everyone in this world who identifies as “transgender/cisgender/nonbinary” (whatever term fits best) to feel comfortable with themselves regardless of how much time spent watching Netflix or talking about politics online will affect their appearance!

We need to change the narrative about beauty. The fashion industry has made us believe that there’s only one correct way to look and if you don’t fit into that box, then you’re not beautiful. It’s important for us to recognize that this is a form of self-care and self-love because it allows us to embrace our bodies and ourselves in a powerful way.
