Accident Prevention and Safety Promotion for Parents and Caregivers of Infants
Introduction
It’s so important to make sure you are safe around your child. There are a number of things that can go wrong and even if you do everything right, accidents still happen. It’s important to keep your child safe from birth, in the womb and after they leave the womb. This article will cover some of the most common ways babies can get hurt or injured and what you can do about them.
Fire and burns
-
Always keep matches and lighters away from infants.
-
Keep fire extinguishers in your home.
-
Don’t smoke around infants, even if they seem to enjoy it. It can be dangerous for them to breathe in smoke and breathe in second-hand cigarette smoke as well.
-
Never leave babies alone with a candle or lit birthday cake (although this one is obvious).
Water – pools, spas and bathtubs
-
Never leave an infant unattended in a pool or spa, even if you can see that he is wearing a life jacket.
-
Always supervise your child when he is in or near water (even small ripples), as even seemingly shallow water may be too deep for him to swim effectively.
-
If you are unsure of your child’s swimming ability, do not allow him into any body of water until he has been taught how to swim safely by an adult who knows how to teach this skill properly with children of different ages and abilities.
Car seats
Car seats are designed to keep your child safe in the event of an accident. They work by reducing the risk of spinal and internal injuries. When you install a car seat correctly, it will be more difficult for your child to get out of the seat than if he were unrestrained in another vehicle.
It’s important that you follow these steps when installing a car seat:
-
Make sure that both front seats are clear before starting installation. If there’s anything blocking them, use an extension cord or something similar so that all four wheels can move freely; otherwise, you may have difficulty getting into any one particular door once you’re ready for takeoff!
-
Install your rear-facing infant carrier on top of both front seats (in back). Do not place it between any part of either side frame member/pillar as this could impede proper airbag deployment during an accident!
Poisoning
Poisoning is a common cause of infant deaths. The most common poisons are household products, medications and foods.
-
Keep all medicines and household products out of reach of your child.
-
Always read the label on each bottle or container before using it in case there is an additive that may be unsafe for a child to ingest.
-
If you’re not sure if something can be dangerous for your baby, throw it away!
-
Even though you might think that only adults should keep poison control center phone numbers handy (because they know what’s safe), this is actually true for everyone—no matter how old you are—because everyone needs access to these numbers!
Falls
-
Use a baby monitor. This is the easiest way to keep track of your child when they are awake and moving around. If you don’t have one, get one!
-
Keep your baby out of high places. Your baby should never be allowed to climb up or down stairs unattended by an adult who is at least 5 feet away from them (or 10 feet if there are other children in the house). If your child does get up on their own, make sure that no stairs are within reach for them; if this isn’t possible, then put them back in bed or somewhere safe until it is safe for them again.
-
Keep your infant away from water sources like lakes and rivers until he can swim independently
Suffocation/Choking – SIDS and Infant Sleep Position
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of death in infants under one year old. There are several reasons why babies can die suddenly and unexpectedly, including suffocation or choking on their own vomit or saliva. The safest sleeping position for an infant is on its back, but there are some exceptions to this rule:
-
Infants should never be placed in bed with parents or caregivers because they’re at greater risk for SIDS when asleep next to someone who smokes cigarettes or has alcohol in their system before falling asleep with them.
-
It’s important that you don’t put your baby down on a soft surface like pillows because this increases his/her risk for suffocation. Instead, place him/her on an adult-sized mattress so he/she can’t roll around too much during sleep time (or even while awake).
Also remember that infants’ heads are smaller than adults’, so even though he may seem small enough now he might grow into larger proportions later on!
Conclusion
It’s important to remember that all of these hazards are preventable and, in many cases, they can be avoided altogether. The key is awareness! That way you can make sure your child is safe from accidents as well as keep yourself and your family out of harm’s way.
