Week 2 | Part 2: Academic Resources and Strategies

 

I have identified the following academic resources and/or strategies that can be applied to success in the nursing practice in general or my specialty in particular.

 

 

Academic Resource/Strategy 1

 

Academic Tutor- While this is an internet program, I intend to take advantage of Walden University’s excellent internet instructional tutoring facilities. My strategy will be to reach out to a tutor as soon as possible whenever I have any class issues, of course this will vary from class to class. I have no issues with feeling comfortable asking for advice on how to answer questions if I have trouble finding information I need. Academic Resource/Strategy 2

 

Local Library – my strategy for using the local library will not only be an outstanding source for me, but will also give me access to newspapers, books and academic content that will assist me in finishing my graduate studies. My strategy will be to continue to work full time during the day and stop by the library around 3pm to look for any study resources or materials I will need for the week ahead. Once I pick out what I need, I will then study them in a secluded, quiet area in my home and utilize them to complete my assignments successfully.

Internet/World Wide Web– The internet is one of the single most significant discoveries known to man. It is at our fingertips 24/7 and plays a vital role in our online learning. I plan on utilizing this academic resource to gain access to information from scholarly articles and journals through Google Scholar, and also use it help me understand APA format as well as Grammarly to assist with grammar. This will allow me to learn in and beyond the information and resources in the online classroom.

 

 

Professional Resource/Strategy 1

 

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) – I intend to engage actively in the International Nurses Council because it has values that I live by. Academic and Professional Success Plan Template. Cultural values, customs, religious beliefs, for instance. The ICN is a coalition of more than 130 organizations of national nurses representing the millions of nurses worldwide (CGFNS, 2019).Since it is recognized on a national level, it would offer significant information depending on the information needed.

 

 

Professional Resource/Strategy 2

 

American Nurses Association (ANA) – These plans would require attending brief online classes and seminars to enhance my clinical and study skills continuity. Joining the ANA when I first became a nurse was one of the best choices I have made. This is a resource I will continue to use throughout my nursing career. My strategy will be to utilize the ANA for information that is credible and will benefit me in completing my MSN through Walden.

 

 

Professional Resource/Strategy 3

 

Nicole Russell, MD- My best friend graduated from Walden a few years ago with her MD in psychology. I intend on reaching out to her for any additional information needed while completing assignments or discussions. She is one of the most knowledgeable people I know and is a mentor to many.

Introduction

Nursing students often struggle with the transition from undergraduate to graduate studies. The academic and professional demands of graduate school can be overwhelming, but there are steps you can take to help ease your transition into graduate nursing. This plan details what you should do during this time and how successful planning will help you get through it successfully!

Explore options and goals.

You should explore your options and goals at every stage of the process. It is important to think about what you would like to do in graduate school, as well as how you feel about the field of nursing. In addition, it’s important to consider other aspects of life such as family, friends and hobbies.

You may want

to choose a specific focus area for your degree program (e.g., clinical research or administration) or focus on both clinical practice and academic scholarship within one discipline (e.g., public health). If this is not clear yet from your application materials, then now might be a good time for some open-ended exploration–this will help ensure that when applying next year there won’t be any surprises later down the line!

Understand expectations.

Your expectations of yourself as a student are important. You need to know what you can expect from yourself and how to manage it.

• What do I want and where am I going?

• How am I doing?

• When will I graduate or get my degree?

Develop a time management plan.

A time management plan is a tool to help you be more efficient and productive. It will help you avoid procrastination, stress-related issues, and other problems that could otherwise prevent you from achieving success in your academic or professional goals.

Here are some tips for developing a good time management plan:

• Develop a morning routine that includes meditation or yoga exercises (such as those found in this article). This will allow you to get started on the right foot before classes begin each day; it also helps keep your mind focused during class periods because it helps clear away any mental clutter that might otherwise distract from what’s happening in front of them.

• Create strategies for making sure every hour of every day gets used productively—for example, setting aside certain hours for studying alone or working on assignments outside of class time; making sure students have access to computers during breaks so they can do their own research online instead of waiting around until someone else finishes theirs first; planning ahead so there aren’t any surprises like missing deadlines due solely due lack thereof planning ahead!

Practice effective study strategies.

• Use flashcards to study. Flashcards are a great way to memorize information, especially when you’re studying for an exam or just want to reinforce what you’ve learned. A nursing philosophy statement is a concise, yet comprehensive statement that defines your understanding of the role of nursing in relation to patient care and health. It should address how you will approach practice as a nurse and what values, or principles guide your actions in the profession.

A nursing theory is an explanation of how something works or why it happens. There are many theories about nursing that exist today; however, they all differ from each other based on their level of evidence supporting them (i.e., scientific research).

Develop learning objectives for courses.

When you are developing your learning objectives, it is important to consider the following:

• What will be learned? The main focus of your learning should be on what will be learned by the end of each course. For example, if you are taking a course that focuses on “nursing theory” and one of its subtopics is “theories about care plans and orders,” then this would be an appropriate objective for your course. You could also state that you want to learn about an area of nursing theory or even just understand how certain theories apply or do not apply in practice situations. The point here is that when creating objectives related to topics within a specific course (such as “nursing theory”), make sure they are specific enough so as not only meet but exceed expectations during each session/unit!

Apply for leadership positions in student nursing organizations.

Leadership positions in student nursing organizations are a great opportunity for you to develop your leadership skills and learn about how to manage others. Many organizations will require you to serve as president or vice president for one of their chapters, so this is an excellent way to gain valuable experience before entering graduate school. You can also apply for leadership roles within student groups based on your interests and expertise, such as Public Relations or Marketing Communications.

To develop these skills further, consider volunteering with an organization where you can use them regularly (e.g., United Way). When looking for volunteer opportunities, consider what type of work experience helps build skills related specifically towards academic success (e.g., tutoring).

Conduct scholarly or practice research.

• Collect and analyze data for analysis, including:

• Identifying relevant literature to review; Choosing appropriate methodologies to collect data from participants (e.g., interviews, surveys) based on their responses; Organizing information into tables or charts summarizing findings across variables; and/or presenting your findings in written or visual form using appropriate graphics software such as Excel® which allows you to create graphs, diagrams and bar graphs easily without having any experience in creating them beforehand

Review graduate curricula and select a program that aligns with your interests and goals.

• Identify the core components of your graduate program.

• Understand the differences between the programs you are considering.

• Identify the most important elements of a program.

• Consider cost, location and duration of the program as well as its accreditation status by your state. Look for programs that are accredited by your state

Develop professional references.

It is important to have a well-rounded set of references in order to get into graduate school.

• Get professional references from your undergraduate program. If you’re applying for a master’s degree, it is helpful as well as appropriate to ask for these from your undergraduate institution; this will help show that you are ready for advanced study and make an impression on the admissions committee. However, if you are applying for a Ph.D., it is not required but highly recommended that students obtain at least two letters of recommendation from faculty members who taught during their time at my university: one letter should focus on my academic performance (e.g., GRE scores), while another should focus on my professional experience (e.g., internships).

• Ask your current professor(s) or adviser(s) if they would be willing contribute an endorsement letter after receiving any additional information necessary before submitting applications so long as everything has been explained clearly in writing beforehand; this could include answering questions regarding whether they think I am capable of finishing successfully within given timeframes without jeopardizing other aspects like maintaining good grades/exams etcetera thus far during college years before matriculation into graduate programs.”
