Purpose:This assignment will help you to:• chart the course of your argument and develop the sequence in which your supporting elements are explored.
• integrate research from the sources in the Annotated Bibliography where they will best support your argument.
• identify areas that need additional support. You can utilize your work from our Week 2 Discussion. Make sure to revise and incorporate some of the useful feedback that you received.
Task:Create three outlines by following these steps:
- Include a strong thesis statement that reveals your argument and your three supporting elements. For example: Active reading should be a primary method of learning because it supports strong communication skills in the workplace, enhances EFL learner’s transition from the native language to the adopted one, and promotes a tangible experience not found in social media engagement.
- Craft a topic outline that includes your working thesis and a bulleted list of your three supporting elements.
- Craft a sentence outline that includes the working thesis and the three topic sentences.
- Craft a paragraph outline that includes the working thesis statement and three substantive body paragraphs. These will become the major sections of your final paper. Within the final paper, you will further expand on these ideas. Each paragraph should open with a topic sentence. A topic sentence delves into one of the supporting elements listed in the thesis. It is a declarative statement that prepares the reader for the ideas explored in the coming paragraphs. In the outline format that you will follow, each of the first sentences in the paragraphs is the topic sentence. Notice how it further expands each of the supporting elements. For example: Reading is beneficial because it supports strong communication skills, which is necessary for anyone seeking employment.
- Integrate research into each paragraph. Utilize a paraphrase within two paragraphs and a short-burst integrated quotation within one. When integrating a quotation, make sure to provide context for the quotation. Explain what the quotation reveals, proves, disproves, or elucidates. How does this quotation impact the argument? What hole in the research does it fill?
- Insert APA in-text citations whenever research is utilized in the outline and include APA references at the end of the outline.
- Begin the second and third paragraphs with a transitional phrase. Review the transitions resources in the Week 3 Learning Module. For example: Beyond offering strong communication skills, more specifically, reading can also provide the necessary tools for English language learners to learn how to transition to and effectively use the English language.
- A good outline should also indicate alternate points of view, such as other solutions, other causes, or other effects. Dedicate some time to considering counterarguments. How can you disprove them?
- Review the rubric for this assignment.
TOPIC OUTLINE
(In this portion, you simply offer the complete thesis and then list the supporting elements. Remember that the supporting elements in the list must be the same as those in the thesis statement and in the same order.)
Thesis: Small businesses can best retain high quality employees by incorporating on-going operational onboarding, enhancing company social and cultural communities, and providing extended educational opportunities beyond the company’s walls.
• incorporating on-going operational onboarding • enhancing company social and cultural communities • providing extended educational opportunities beyond the company’s walls.
SENTENCE OUTLINE
(For this portion, you will create topic sentences for each of the supporting elements. Each topic sentence will feature the individual supporting element and extend knowledge a bit more beyond what is already known from the thesis. You also need to include transitional words or phrases in the second and third topic sentences.)
Thesis: Small businesses can best retain high quality employees by incorporating on-going operational onboarding, enhancing company social and cultural communities, and providing extended educational opportunities beyond the company’s walls.
• Incorporating on-going operational onboarding provides employees with multiple opportunities to keep updated and to enhance their skills.
• Beyond continual onboarding, the process of enhancing company social and cultural communities generates a more open environment where employees can more easily collaborate.
• An additional opportunity for retaining quality employees is in the offering of extended educational opportunities beyond the company’s walls, which provides employees additional training and the potential to move up in the company.
PARAGRAPH OUTLINE
(For this section, you will take each topic sentence and add to it to create a paragraph of information related directly to the supporting element and also back to the thesis statement. You will also add at least one form of source support in each paragraph. In one paragraph, you will use an integrated quote but can use paraphrasing in the other two. These paragraphs will create a working skeleton—or draft—of the larger paper that is due in Week 4.)
One of the most efficient ways to encourage employees to stay with an organization is by ensuring that they have all of the skills and abilities necessary to complete their jobs. Consistently providing guidance at all levels provides them with the knowledge to stay abreast of changes in the company and to be able to adjust how they function in the workplace (Cesário & Chambel, 2019) Additionally, organizations that provide continual onboarding can avoid many of the challenges that typically befall companies that do not maintain updates with all employees. When guidance is not continual and employee activity is not monitored, companies can find themselves wasting time and money on re-establishing the processes and policies previously established. Having everyone understanding and applying them regularly because of continual guidance reduces the possibility for reduced operational capacity. Employees also find that additional and regular guidance allows them to learn more about the company rather than the specific office or department they might work in, which promotes a sense of loyalty.
• Beyond continual onboarding, the process of enhancing company social and cultural communities generates a more open environment where employees can more easily collaborate. When employees find common ground with other employees, they are more easily able to fit in and to work as a team (Bernstein et al., 2020). Companies can create this environment by offering opportunities for employees to become part of the larger set of communities built into the existing landscape of the organization. For example, companies can create social media access points via a business Facebook page, Tik Tok, or Instagram and allow employees to feature themselves and others conducting the work they were hired for, and to celebrate company accomplishments. Likewise, organizations can offer cultural days that celebrate the diversity in the employee ranks. Offering standardized days off for specific cultural celebrations; introducing cultural events during work hours and using the cultural knowledge of employees to drive innovation in the company.
• An additional opportunity for retaining quality employees is in the offering of extended educational opportunities beyond the company’s walls, which provides employees additional training and the potential to move up in the company. Educational opportunities are becoming more available, yet the costs associated with gaining additional education can create a barrier for many employees. Companies, however, gain tax benefits if they provide some educational opportunities. To that end, these organizations can offer employees tuition remission at local colleges, thereby supporting the community, as well, if they earn an acceptable grade. This helps employees increase their knowledge and their promotability. For a company, this promotes high retention and reduces the costs associated with having to hire and train new hires and, clearly, has a “growing important in attracting and retaining talents” (Galetic & Klindžic, 2020, p. 126). Companies can also provide learning opportunities by supporting employees in professional development via conference attendance. Attending these conferences provides employees the ability to engage more fully in their fields, thus becoming experts that can help lead motivation and innovation.
