Assessment Description
Linguistically responsive lesson planning ensures students from diverse linguistic backgrounds are engaged and learning as they are in the language acquisition process. Thoughtful planning incorporates varied research-based instructional strategies and methods addressing the linguistic needs of ELLs.
Part 1: Lesson Plan
Imagine you are planning a content area lesson for your future classroom and you want to integrate supports for your ELLs’ language acquisition. You may choose the grade level and content area, but your class contains 25 students with varying cultural experiences and learning needs. For this lesson, one of your goals is to specifically support the academic language of your five ELLs who are at various levels of language development.
Using the “COE Lesson Plan template” located in the Student Success Center and the Arizona Academic Standards and English Language Proficiency Standards, create a lesson plan that demonstrates linguistically responsive teaching strategies for a grade level and content area of your choice. In the indicated sections of the template, include the following:
National/State Learning Standards: Content and ELP/ELD standards
Specific Learning Target(s)/Objectives: Content and language objectives
Academic Language and Teaching Strategies: Identification of academic language that supports learning across content areas (e.g., key direction words, language functions) and content specific language needed for the lesson. Include a brief description of which strategies will be used to teach the language and how these strategies will support ELLs’ achievement across content areas. These strategies may be included in the appropriate multiple means of representation, engagement, or expression sections of the lesson, but should be specifically called out and distinguishable from the content area portions of the lesson.
Extension Activity and/or Homework: An extension activity that includes the continued practice of academic and content-specific language for ELLs
Part 2: Reflection
In 250-500 words, reflect on what aspects of linguistically responsive teaching may be most challenging for you in your future professional practice and how you will continue to adjust your practice for self-improvement. Discuss how you plan to seek continuous professional development in the field of English language learning and teaching.
