Week Four Assignment
When working with clients it is important that we as counselors are purposeful with our words, use of skills, use of techniques, and our exhibited behaviors. In weeks 1-4, we will introduce you to a handful of different counseling skills each week. For each weekly assignment (weeks 1-4) you will be provided with unique prompts to help you analyze and reflect on your use of counseling skills and the weekly readings. Please carefully read the assignment instructions document and rubric. The writing prompts and rubric will be different from one week-to-the-next. Make sure to fully respond to each prompt and to use the rubric to guide your writing (the rubric is used to determine your grade). Your assignments should be written in accordance with APA 7th edition guidelines. Although there is no minimum page length requirement for this assignment, page length recommendations are provided for each bullet point to help guide your writing. The lengths of your responses to prompts will sometimes vary from week to week depending on the content of your weekly recorded counseling demonstration session.

The topics you will be discussing this week are listed below. Hint: Consider organizing your paper by making each bullet point a level one heading.
· Strengths and areas for improvement (1-1 ½ pages). Students will identify one strength in the session as well as one area for improvement (also describe how you can improve in this area). Points should be supported with examples. What are your goal/s for development in this class/progress toward your goals?
· Challenging (½ -1 page). Students should describe and critically evaluate how they challenged the mock client on one or more discrepancies during the session. If no instance of challenging occurred, discuss your strengths and areas for improvement for challenging clients. Points should be supported with an example. (see readings/resources)
· Theory (1-1 ½ pages). Students will examine how their personal theory of counseling was used to help guide their work in the session. Describe one concept of your approach and how that concept influenced how you worked with the mock client. In the event you can not identify how you used theory to guide your session, discuss how you can do so in the next session and why it is important.
· Change techniques (1 page). Describe your use of one change technique during the session. Why did you select that specific change technique? How would you know if it was effective? What would you do different, if anything?
· Mental Status Exam (1/2 page). You have been introduced to the mental status exam that can give objective and subjective observations of the client. You will write an MSE report about your client where you will summarize any and all observations. This report should be detailed in describing your client. Examples are attached in Blackboard but are you may find other examples.
Students should use two professional references and examples from their weekly counseling demonstration to support their points.
