Medications:

Ciprofloxacin 500mg PO BID for 5 days.

Acidophilus 1 capsule daily.

Bismuth Subsalicylate 525mg/30ml q2 hours as needed for diarrhea. Maximum 8 doses per day.

Acetaminophen 325 to 650mg Q4-6 hours as needed for fever. Maximum dose of 4000mg/day.

Suggested Consults/Referrals: Gastroenterology as needed, if diarrhea persists or further issues develop.

Client Education: Begin aggressive oral hydration as tolerable. Drink clear liquids that are not sugary to receive best

benefits such as water and Pedialyte. Stay on a clear liquid diet until normal diet is tolerated. Begin by reintroducing

bland foods such as toast and rice when able but do not exclusively follow BRAT diet or you will not receive enough

nutrition. Avoid consumption of undercooked meats. Frequently wash hands, especially while traveling.

Follow-up: GO TO NEAREST EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT IF: abdominal pain worsens, severe nausea and vomiting develop,

large amounts of blood are noticed in stool, dark coffee ground vomit occurs, chest pain. Follow up in 3 days if symptoms

have not improved at all (continuation of diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever). Follow up as needed if symptoms are

improving (decreased bouts of diarrhea, lessening abdominal pain, reduced fever).
