Assessment Description
Classroom activities focused on the study of morphemes can help ELLs understand that words are made up of individual units. When students recognize how English words are formed by joining roots, prefixes, and suffixes, they are more likely to increase their vocabulary knowledge, comprehension of texts, and proficiency in writing.
Part 1: Morphology Activities
Using the grade level and content area of your choice, complete the “Morphology Activities” template by designing three different morphology activities in connection to a content area lesson. Focus the activities on one or more of the following morphemes: roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Provide content and ELP/ELD standards and content and language objectives. Include 150-250 word descriptions and any related links for the following:
Activity 1: An activity that can be conducted in a traditional classroom environment where the teacher and students interact in person.
Activity 2: An activity that can be conducted in a synchronous online learning environment where the teacher and students interact in a virtual class meeting, such as through Zoom or Google Meets.
Activity 3: An activity that can be completed by students digitally and independently in an asynchronous or blended learning environment, where the activity directions and online resources provided allow students to have control over where, when, and how they complete the work.
The activities do not need to be physically or digitally created in full, only described. Links can be included to show examples or resources that will be used for the activities.
Part 2: Reflection – Differentiation
In addition, write a 250-500 word reflection describing how you would differentiate the morphology activities you created for three general ranges of English language proficiency levels (WIDA ELP Levels 1-2, 3, and 4-5 or Arizona ELP Levels Pre-Emergent/Emergent, Basic, and Intermediate). Include an explanation of which learning environment you found most challenging to differentiate for various ELP levels.
Support your activities with a minimum of three scholarly resources.
